Mexico City is one of those places that gets under your skin.

I’ve traveled most of Mexico — 25 states and counting — and I keep coming back here. I’ve spent months living in CDMX over the years, longer than anywhere else since I sold my house in 2020. For a full-time traveler, that says a lot.

It’s not a city that screams for your attention. It doesn’t try to impress you. But if you give it time, it quietly wins you over.

Mexico City is green, walkable, wildly creative, deeply historical, and endlessly layered. One minute you’re sipping coffee under jacaranda trees, the next you’re standing on top of an ancient pyramid, and later that night you’re eating one of the best meals of your life in a tucked-away neighborhood spot you’d never find on your own.

Chapultepec Castle balcony with panoramic green city view

Chapultepec Castle balcony with panoramic green city view

It’s one of the best foodie cities in the world — from street food, to regional Mexican cuisine from all over the country, to high-end, Michelin-level restaurants that rival the U.S. and Europe.

It’s also a city people consistently misunderstand — or rush through.

So let’s fix that.

This guide is how I’d explain Mexico City to a friend and client: where to stay based on who you are, when to go (and when not to), what’s actually worth your time, and how to experience it in a way that feels intentional instead of frantic.

First Things First: What Mexico City Is Actually Like

Cathedral with market vendors (shows bustling, historic energy)

Cathedral with market vendors (shows bustling, historic energy)

People love to compare Mexico City to New York, and honestly, it’s not wrong — but it’s incomplete.

Yes, it’s massive. Yes, it’s busy. Yes, it’s a cultural capital.

But CDMX is also:

  • Surprisingly green
  • Extremely walkable
  • Deeply neighborhood-driven
  • More relaxed than most people expect

And despite its size, it doesn’t feel overwhelming once you understand how it works.

Even if it’s one of the most expensive cities in Mexico, it’s far more affordable than most major global cities. Public transportation is cheap and efficient, Ubers (or Didi, the local app) are everywhere, and food — especially good food — is incredibly accessible.

I walk everywhere when I’m here. Six miles a day is normal. I also take the metro. And I’ve always felt safe doing it.

When to Visit Mexico City (and When to Think Twice)

This is where people often get it wrong.

🌤️ Summer isn’t the problem people think it is

Yes, summer is technically the rainy season. But “rainy” usually means an afternoon downpour (5 p.m., almost like clockwork) — not all-day gloom.

Mornings are often sunny and warm. The city feels lush and alive. And because of the altitude, the heat is rarely oppressive.

If you plan your days right (out early, rest midday, dinner later), summer can actually be one of the best times to visit.

I hate rain, but I love summers in Mexico City. The days are fresh

🍂 Fall Is Magic

October and November are my personal favorites.

The rains taper off and the city hums with energy. Día de Muertos brings color and culture without feeling overly touristy if you know where to go.

If you want the “I get why people love this place” experience — this is it.

The elevation is the secret sauce — it’s never sweltering or freezing — which is one of the reasons it’s such an easy city to stay long-term in.

🏙️ The truth about its elevation

A quick note on elevation: Mexico City sits at about 7,350 feet, which puts it roughly on par with Santa Fe and higher than Denver — but lower than many mountain towns in Colorado. If you’ve felt fine in places like Santa Fe, Boulder, or Park City, you’ll likely be just fine in CDMX too.

True high-altitude destinations in Latin America are places like Quito or La Paz, where elevation really becomes a factor. Mexico City isn’t in that category. That said, if you’re sensitive to altitude, you might notice mild effects your first day (fatigue, shortness of breath), so take it easy, hydrate well, and avoid overdoing it when you arrive. If you’ve had issues with elevation before, it’s smart to check with your doctor ahead of time.

Important Holidays & Events to Know About

Frida Kahlo Museum decorated entrance (iconic Día de Muertos decoration)

✝️ Semana Santa (Holy Week)

During Holy Week, many locals leave the city, go visit family, or take beach vacations. Some restaurants and businesses close or operate on limited schedules. Religious processions take over parts of the city.

Unless you’re specifically interested in Catholic traditions, this is not the best week for a first visit.

🇲🇽 Mexican Independence Day (September 16)

Surprise! Mexican Independence Day is NOT on Cinco de Mayo… in fact, Cinco de Mayo is barely a blip in Mexico.

On the other hand, on September 15-16, the Zócalo fills with tens of thousands of people. There are concerts, fireworks, flags everywhere, and an intense sense of national pride. It’s loud, joyful, chaotic, and unforgettable.

It’s also not the best time if you’re hoping for a relaxed cultural visit. Hotels fill quickly, traffic is a mess, and sleep is optional.

Amazing if you want energy. Not ideal if you want calm.

Personally, I absolutely love the time around Mexican Independence Day. One of my favorite seasonal dishes becomes available — chile en nogada!

💀 Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead)

The weeks approaching Dia de Muertos is my absolute favorite time of year in Mexico — with the decorations, flowers everywhere, and special pan de muerto, it’s more festive than Christmas!

Quick insider note: the big Day of the Dead parade usually happens the weekend before November 1st, not on the holiday itself. That’s intentional, and partly to avoid overlapping with Formula 1 weekend. If you show up expecting a massive parade on November 1st or 2nd, you’ll likely miss it.

The actual holiday itself is quieter and more meaningful, with locals honoring loved ones in cemeteries and at home altars — beautiful, but very different from the spectacle people imagine.

If you want to experience Día de Muertos in a deeper, more traditional way, this is exactly why I host a Day of the Dead group trip in Oaxaca each year. It’s one of the most powerful cultural experiences in Mexico. (You can learn more about that trip here.)

🏎️ Formula 1 Weekend (October 30-November 1)

If you’re an F1 fan, you already know.

If you’re not: expect packed hotels, inflated prices, and a very international, party-heavy crowd. It can be fun, but it changes the vibe of the city significantly.

Where to Stay (Based on Your Personality)

This matters more than which hotel you choose.

Condesa vs. Roma: similar, but not the same

México Mi Amor colorful wall (vibrant neighborhood vibe)

México Mi Amor colorful wall (vibrant neighborhood vibe)

People often lump Condesa and Roma together, but they feel very different once you’re actually on the ground.

Condesa is quieter, greener, and more residential. Think wide, tree-lined streets, Art Deco buildings, dogs everywhere, and people actually living their lives. It’s centered around Parque México and Parque España, and it’s ideal if you like morning walks, coffee shops, and a calmer, more neighborhood-y vibe. It still has great restaurants and bars — just without the constant buzz.

Roma, on the other hand, has more edge and energy. This is where a lot of the city’s food scene lives, along with cocktail bars, galleries, and late-night spots. It’s more creative, more social, and more alive after dark. If you want to be in the middle of things — eating well, bar hopping, and feeling the pulse of the city — Roma is probably your spot.

🏨 My favorite hotel in Condesa

Polanco vs. Centro Histórico

Cathedral rooftop sunset view (elegant Centro perspective)

Cathedral rooftop sunset view (elegant Centro perspective)

These two neighborhoods couldn’t feel more different — and both are right for the right traveler.

Polanco is polished, upscale, and immaculately put together. This is where you’ll find luxury hotels, high-end shopping, and some of the city’s best fine dining. It’s calm, clean, and very comfortable. Think wide sidewalks, designer storefronts, and beautifully curated restaurants. If you like things easy, elegant, and well-organized — Polanco makes a lot of sense.

That said, it can feel a little removed from the grit and soul of the city. You’re seeing a very refined version of Mexico City here.

Centro Histórico, on the other hand, is intense in the best way. This is the heart of the city — loud, chaotic, historic, and endlessly fascinating. You’re walking through layers of Aztec, colonial, and modern Mexico all at once. It’s where you’ll find the Zócalo, the Cathedral, street performers, markets, and some of the most important architecture in the country.

It’s not quiet. It’s not polished. But it’s unforgettable.

If you’re here for history, culture, and don’t mind a little grit, Centro is incredible. If you want calm mornings and polished evenings, Polanco is the better fit.

🏨 My favorite hotel in Centro Histórico

Coyoacán

Frida Kahlo Museum decorated entrance (iconic Día de Muertos decoration)

Frida Kahlo Museum decorated entrance (iconic Día de Muertos decoration)

Coyoacán feels like a small town that just happens to be inside one of the biggest cities in the world. Cobblestone streets, leafy plazas, street musicians, and a slower pace make it a nice contrast to the energy of Roma or Centro.

This is also where you’ll find Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, and while it’s popular for a reason, the neighborhood itself is just as much of the draw. It’s a great place to wander, linger over lunch, and get a feel for a more traditional side of Mexico City.

What to Do in Mexico City (What’s Actually Worth Your Time)

Mexico City has an overwhelming number of attractions, so this isn’t meant to be exhaustive — it’s meant to cover the things that actually add value to your trip.

Chapultepec Castle vs. Anthropology Museum (My Unpopular Opinion)

Chapultepec Castle terrace with checkered floor

Chapultepec Castle terrace with checkered floor

This might be controversial, but I’m going to say it anyway:

If you only have time for one, I’d choose Chapultepec Castle over the National Museum of Anthropology.

Now — the Anthropology Museum is incredible. It’s world-class, beautifully curated, and absolutely worth visiting if you love museums or want a deep dive into pre-Hispanic history. You could easily spend half a day there.

But here’s the thing: it feels like a museum.

Chapultepec Castle, on the other hand, feels like stepping directly into Mexico’s history.

The castle sits high above the city, with sweeping views over Chapultepec Park. It’s the only castle in North America that actually housed royalty, and it’s been everything from a military academy to an imperial residence to a presidential home. You walk through rooms where emperors lived, where wars were planned, where Mexico’s modern identity took shape.

And the best part?
You’re learning history without feeling like you’re in a classroom.

If you want:

  • Big-picture context
  • Incredible views
  • A sense of how Mexico’s past connects to the present
  • And a more experiential visit

Go to Chapultepec Castle.

If you love museums, history timelines, and artifacts — absolutely add the Anthropology Museum too. Ideally, you do both. But if you’re short on time or museum-ed out, the castle wins.

Historic Center (Centro Histórico)

Templo Mayor ruins with Cathedral (shows layered history)

Templo Mayor ruins with Cathedral (shows layered history)

This is the heart of Mexico City, built directly on top of the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán.

You’ll find:

  • The Zócalo (main square)
  • Metropolitan Cathedral (the Spanish built this from the stones of Tenochtitlán)
  • Templo Mayor ruins & museum
  • Palacio de Bellas Artes
  • Barrio Chino (little China town!)

It’s busy, loud, and layered with history. Expect crowds, busy street vendors, and constant movement — it’s one of the best places to understand how old and complex this city really is.

Lucha Libre

Masked lucha libre action in the ring at CMLL’s 89th Anniversary show.

Masked lucha libre action in the ring at CMLL’s 89th Anniversary show.

This is not a gimmick — it’s a cultural institution!

Lucha Libre wrestling matches are loud, theatrical, and wildly entertaining. You don’t need to understand Spanish to follow what’s happening, and the crowd energy alone makes it worth going. Arena México is the most well-known venue, and shows run multiple nights a week.

It’s one of those things that sounds odd on paper but ends up being a highlight. (I’ve been four times!)

Xochimilco

Xochimilco is famous for its colorful boats and floating parties, but it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site with deep historical roots.

Most visitors rent a trajinera (boat) for a few hours (or go on a tour), bring food and drinks, and float through the canals while mariachi bands pass by. It’s social, loud, and fun — best done with a group.

Day Trips & Easy Add-Ons from Mexico City

One of the best things about CDMX is how easy it is to pair with other destinations.

Teotihuacán (1 hour)

Pyramid of the Moon

Pyramid of the Moon

About an hour north of the city are the pyramids of Teotihuacán — one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico.

You can visit on foot or by hot air balloon at sunrise. Either way, it’s impressive and absolutely worth the time. Go early to avoid crowds and heat; there is no shade!

Grutas de Tolantongo (4 hours)

Thermal pools in canyon

Thermal pools in canyon

Located about four hours away, this is a series of stunning thermal pools carved into a canyon.

It’s more effort to get to, but it’s one of the most visually striking places in central Mexico. Best as an overnight or long day trip if you’re comfortable with travel logistics — operators offer long day trips from Mexico City.

Tequisquiapan, Central Mexico wine country (4 hours)

This area is one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets.

Think vineyards, cheese farms, small colonial towns, and a relaxed pace. It’s an easy pairing with Mexico City if you want a slower, more scenic few days. (I’ve written more about this separately and often recommend it as part of a longer itinerary.)

San Miguel de Allende (5 hours by car)

A beautiful colonial city with a hallmark pink spire cathedral, known for architecture, murals, and expat culture.

It’s more polished and more touristy than CDMX, but for good reason. It pairs well with Mexico City if you want contrast — busy urban energy followed by something slower and more refined.

Why I Plan Mexico Trips Differently

Palacio de Bellas Artes (professional, elegant)

Palacio de Bellas Artes (professional, elegant)

Mexico isn’t a destination you throw together with a few hotel bookings and a list of attractions. It also offers WAY MORE than the all-inclusive beach vacay.

I live here part-time.
I know how the seasons affect travel.
I know what’s worth the splurge — and what’s not.
And I know how to connect Mexico City with the rest of the country in a way that actually makes sense.

If you want:

  • Thoughtfully planned itineraries
  • Hands-on cultural and culinary experiences
  • Guides who actually know the places they’re showing you
  • And a trip that feels intentional, not rushed

That’s where I come in.

And yes — I absolutely hold back some of my best recommendations for clients. That’s part of the value!

Burnout is no longer a warning sign. It is a full-blown crisis. Recent reporting estimates that 66% of U.S. workers felt burned out in 2025, an all-time high, with overload still rising (Forbes). For companies, the stakes are steep. Lost productivity, turnover, health-care claims, and disengagement can total thousands of dollars per employee each year and more than five million annually for a 1,000-person firm (Forbes). Deloitte likewise found that 77% of employees have experienced burnout at their current job, many more than once (Deloitte).

EAST COAST SANCTUARIES FOR THE OVERWORKED

Canyon Ranch, Lenox, Massachusetts

Canyon Ranch, Lenox, Massachusetts

In the Berkshires, this legend blends fitness and nutrition consultations with indulgent spa treatments and four-season outdoor time

In the Berkshires, this 120-acre property has operated as a comprehensive wellness destination since 1989. The model here is medical-grade assessment paired with immediate application: biometric screenings, nutrition consultations with registered dietitians, and movement prescriptions from exercise physiologists who understand desk-bound bodies.

The spa menu includes over 100 services, but the real value is in the integrative approach. You might pair a deep-tissue session with a consultation on sleep architecture, or follow a guided forest walk with a workshop on cognitive load management. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing across groomed trails; summer opens the lake for kayaking and paddleboarding. Four-season outdoor access matters when your daily life offers none.

Accommodations range from classic inn rooms to private cottages. Meals are included, and the culinary team builds menus around anti-inflammatory principles without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction. This is not a detox retreat. It is a recalibration program for people who need to return to high-demand roles with better operating systems.

The Lodge at Woodloch, Pennsylvania

The Lodge at Woodloch, Pennsylvania

About 95 miles from New York City, this all-inclusive retreat offers hydromassage pools, MindBody classes, creative arts workshops, and chef-driven dining.

Ninety-five miles from New York City, this all-inclusive property sits on 500 forested acres with a private lake. The appeal for executives is the contained environment: no decisions about where to eat, what to book, or how to spend your time. Everything is included, and the schedule is designed to remove friction.

Hydromassage pools use targeted water pressure for muscle recovery. MindBody classes cover breathwork, meditation, and somatic techniques that translate to boardrooms and long flights. Creative arts workshops (ceramics, painting, journaling) offer a cognitive shift that pure relaxation often cannot provide. When your work involves constant problem-solving, making something with your hands rewires the brain temporarily.

Chef-driven dining focuses on whole foods, omega-3-rich proteins, and complex carbohydrates that stabilize energy. Rooms are quiet, simply appointed, and designed for sleep. No televisions. No work calls bleeding into downtime. The Lodge succeeds because it removes the need to self-regulate while teaching you how to do exactly that once you leave.

WEST COAST ESCAPES FOR DECISION FATIGUE

Canyon Ranch Woodside, California

Canyon Ranch Woodside, California

Tucked into redwoods, this intimate property has glass-walled treehouses, private yoga, and expert workshops.

This 16-acre property in the Bay Area redwoods is Canyon Ranch’s most intimate offering. Treehouses with floor-to-ceiling glass bring the forest inside. Maximum capacity is 38 guests, which means access to practitioners is immediate and programming feels bespoke.

The focus here is executive retreat: private yoga sessions, one-on-one workshops with behavioral psychologists, and nutrition planning for people managing complex travel schedules and client dinners. The organic garden supplies the kitchen, and meals are served family-style to encourage connection without forced socialization.

Outdoor activity includes guided hikes through old-growth forest, mountain biking on fire roads, and restorative movement classes held on outdoor decks. Leaders who spend their days in decision fatigue come here for the kind of quiet that allows bigger thinking to surface. No agenda. No deliverables. Just space to think clearly again.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California

One of the few U.S. resorts with on-site natural mineral hot springs, offering KUR rituals at Willow Stream Spa, private golf access, and wine country immersion.

One of only a handful of U.S. resorts with natural thermal mineral hot springs on site. The water, sourced from an underground aquifer, reaches 135 degrees Fahrenheit and contains minerals that support muscle recovery and circulation. Willow Stream Spa offers KUR rituals (a European hydrotherapy tradition) that combine thermal bathing with massage, body treatments, and chromotherapy.

The property sits in Sonoma wine country, which means access to world-class vineyards, farm-to-table dining, and Michelin-level restaurants within a ten-minute drive. The concierge arranges private tastings and winery tours, allowing you to blend rest with cultural engagement. The 18-hole championship golf course adjacent to the property offers another way to decompress.

Rooms feature soaking tubs, fireplaces, and private patios. Service is polished but not intrusive. You can participate in group fitness classes, book private training sessions, or spend entire days cycling between thermal pools and treatment rooms. This is wellness for people who want sophistication alongside restoration.

The Ranch Malibu, California

The Ranch Malibu, California

Results-driven to the core: early hikes, yoga, plant-based cuisine, and daily massage.

Results-driven to the core. Early morning hikes range from four to eight hours depending on your fitness level and program tier. Daily yoga, plant-based meals in precise portions, and one hour of massage each afternoon. No caffeine. No alcohol. No phones during the day.

The program is structured and non-negotiable. You wake at 5:30 a.m., hike by 6:00 a.m., return for breakfast, attend fitness or yoga classes, eat lunch, receive bodywork, then participate in evening stretching or meditation. Dinner is communal. Lights out by 9:00 p.m.

Guests leave lighter, clearer, and sharper. The ROI is measurable: improved cardiovascular markers, reduced inflammation, better sleep patterns, and mental clarity that persists for weeks. This is not for everyone. It is for people who respond to structure, who want accountability, and who need to break patterns that medication and willpower alone have not addressed.

SOUTHWESTERN ESCAPES BUILT FOR TRANSFORMATION

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

A global standard in integrative wellness for decades, offering fully personalized programs for mind, body, and spirit with leading experts.

A global standard in integrative wellness for more than four decades. The Tucson property spans 150 acres in the Sonoran Desert foothills with views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. What differentiates this location is depth of expertise: physicians, acupuncturists, behavioral health specialists, physical therapists, and spiritual counselors all under one roof.

You build a fully personalized program. Consultations might include metabolic testing, hormone panels, sleep studies, or stress response assessments. Practitioners collaborate across disciplines, so your nutritionist and your therapist are reviewing the same data and coordinating recommendations.

Outdoor programming includes desert hikes, mountain biking, tennis, and guided meditation walks. The spa offers more than 40 types of massage and bodywork. Fitness classes range from aqua jogging to kickboxing to Pilates reformer sessions. Accommodations include casitas with private patios and desert gardens.

Meals are designed around your goals. If you are addressing insulin resistance, your plate reflects that. If you are managing autoimmune flare-ups, the kitchen adjusts accordingly. This is an executive retreat built entirely around you, with the clinical infrastructure to support measurable change.

Mii amo, Sedona, Arizona

In Boynton Canyon, 23 casitas host multi-night journeys that feel more spiritual than standard spa.

In Boynton Canyon, 23 casitas host multi-night journeys that feel more spiritual than standard spa. The property is designed around the concept of transformation rather than pampering. You select a journey theme (stress relief, mindfulness, personal growth, outdoor adventure) and your daily schedule builds from there.

Treatments draw from Native American traditions, Eastern medicine, and evidence-based bodywork. You might begin with a crystal therapy session, follow it with a guided meditation in the canyon, then close the day with deep-tissue work focused on releasing held tension. The approach is holistic without being dogmatic.

Privacy is paramount. Casitas are separated by native landscaping. Meals are served in a communal dining room, but conversation is optional. Many guests come here alone, seeking rare quiet away from roles that demand constant availability. The red rock canyon setting amplifies the sense of remove. You are unreachable here, by design.

BOOK WITH VIP AMENITIES

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona

Equine experiences, mindfulness workshops, and challenge courses sit alongside a renowned spa.

Equine experiences form the core of Miraval’s approach to presence and self-awareness. Horses respond to human energy in real time, offering immediate feedback on how you show up. For leaders accustomed to controlling outcomes, working with a 1,200-pound animal that cannot be managed through force is clarifying.

Beyond equine therapy, the property offers mindfulness workshops, aerial yoga, climbing walls, zip lines, and a desert labyrinth for walking meditation. The spa is excellent (over 30,000 square feet), but the real work happens in the experiential programming. Clarity often arrives in surprising ways, particularly when you step outside familiar modes of problem-solving.

Accommodations include desert-view rooms and private casitas. Meals are included and designed to support sustained energy rather than restriction. The resort operates on an all-inclusive model, removing transactional friction. You can participate as much or as little as you want. Many executives book five to seven nights to allow time for genuine recalibration.

SOUTHERN DESTINATIONS FOR SERIOUS RESTORATION

Lake Austin Spa Resort, Texas

Lake Austin Spa Resort, Texas

Only 40 rooms on a serene lake, with paddleboard yoga, chef-led classes, kayaking, and a relaxed, intentional pace.

Only 40 rooms on 19 acres along Lake Austin. The intimacy of the property allows for highly personalized programming. You work with a wellness concierge to design your days: spa treatments, fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply reading by the water.

Paddleboard yoga takes place on the lake at sunrise. Chef-led classes teach you how to prepare nutrient-dense meals that fit into your actual life, not an aspirational version of it. The culinary team accommodates dietary needs without making it feel like a limitation.

Rooms are comfortable but not opulent. The focus is on the program, not the fixtures. Service is warm and attentive without hovering. This is a Condé Nast Traveler favorite because it delivers measurable restoration without pretension. You leave with tools, not just memories of being pampered.

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach

Mediterranean-style oceanfront haven with unobstructed beach access, three pools, and standout dining.

Mediterranean-style oceanfront property with unobstructed Atlantic views, three oceanfront pools, and four on-site restaurants. The Forbes Five-Star hotel and spa cater to guests who want luxury alongside wellness, not luxury instead of it.

The 20,000-square-foot ESPA offers thalassotherapy, Mediterranean-inspired treatments, and Finnish saunas with ocean views. You can book deep-tissue sessions, Ayurvedic treatments, or results-focused facials. Fitness programming includes beach yoga, aqua aerobics, and personal training.

The property is family-friendly, with a marine biology program for children that includes snorkeling and ocean conservation education. For executives traveling with family, this solves the problem of wellness travel that isolates you from the people you are trying to spend more time with. You can restore while your children engage in meaningful programming steps away.

Dining includes Il Mulino New York, Costa Grill, and AQ Chop House. Rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized balconies, and Italian linens. This is wellness for people who want sophistication, not simplicity.

The Takeaway for Professionals

Wellness is not a luxury. It is a strategic reset that improves performance, leadership, and resilience. Whether you choose the structure of The Ranch Malibu, the integrative programs at Canyon Ranch, or lakeside calm at Lake Austin, the outcome is similar. You return sharper, stronger, and more inspired.

If you are serious about leveling up your career, investing in your well-being is your next power move.

Three Ways to Make Your Wellness Retreat Count

  1. Unplug completely
Turn off notifications, set an out-of-office message, and give yourself permission to disconnect. Real rest requires psychological detachment from work.

  2. Go beyond the spa menu
Book at least one guided workshop or outdoor activity. Paddleboard yoga, equine therapy, or a mindfulness session can spark breakthroughs the massage table never will.

  3. Bring one practice home

Are you dreaming of far-flung destinations, remote, hidden coves, undiscovered corners of the earth, and exhilarating adventure? Perhaps you have already decided to plan your next adventure on an expedition cruise and are wondering whether you’re making the right decision. Of course, you’re probably concerned about picking the best cruise line, itinerary, and ship. Maybe you’re even a bit confused and overwhelmed by the seemingly endless options and advertisements. But that’s okay because you’re on the right track!

“If happiness is the goal – and it should be, then adventures should be top priority.”
– Richard Branson

An expedition cruise is an excellent way to embark on a unique, unforgettable vacation for countless reasons. First, expedition vessels allow travelers to visit multiple hard-to-reach destinations in some of the most remote and seemingly inhospitable places on earth. But while explorers of bygone days had to brave rough terrain, arduous conditions, and scarce resources, today’s expedition cruises provide all the comforts and luxuries we’ve grown accustomed to having. From relaxing accommodations (think feather pillows and down bedding) to excellent service (even butler’s to draw your bath) to extensive entertaining packages, and of course, incredible scenery. But choosing a good expedition cruise line can be difficult as many excellent options, each with its unique set of offerings.

But worry not! That’s precisely why you’ve come to the right place because we’re going to help you figure out the best expedition cruise that will make your next adventure the most unforgettable and life-changing of all. Here are all the steps you need to follow:

1. Choose Your Destination and Itinerary

The first and perhaps most crucial step to choosing an excellent expedition cruise is picking the destination you will visit. Of course, you might think this is an obvious first step but consider this part carefully. Different destinations cater to diverse travel styles and, therefore, various cruise lines. For example, some cruise lines excel at polar expeditions, while others are known for coastal exploration in the warm waters of South America. Therefore, you can’t go out on a limb and pick a cruise line first and the destination later. For example, maybe you have your heart set on a specific cruise line to get to the Amazon but find out later that this cruise does not even plan expeditions there. So before you settle on a cruise line and start picking your wardrobe, make sure it offers itineraries to your destination of choice. Talk to your luxury travel advisor about the places on your bucket list.

Popular expedition destinations include Antarctica, the Amazon, Alaska, the Arctic, the Galapagos Islands, and Iceland. Each has fantastic and unique places to explore, weather-dependent seasonality, and potential limitations for guests with health conditions. Specific destinations such as Antarctica require extensive travel and longer itineraries. Consider the amount of time you can dedicate to the experience and whether you are comfortable spending several weeks onboard a ship. If Europe seems more like your style, check out some of our favorite European river cruises!

If you have any health limitations, talk to your doctor about your travel plans before putting down a deposit. Although many expedition cruise lines are equipped with medical staff, some destinations are prone to rough weather and high seas. Given their remote locations, you may also find yourself far from civilization and access to hospitals. For this reason, talk to your travel advisor about purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance plan well in advance of your scheduled departure.

 Best Expedition Cruise Line

2. Set A Budget

Expedition cruises are high-ticket travel expenses, so you will have to consider the overall cost you are comfortable investing in the experience before starting your research. The cruise price depends on the length of travel, destination, and of course, the cruise line itself, so setting a budget first and foremost is key to ensuring a great experience.

Low Budget

If you’re hoping for an affordable cruise line that doesn’t break the bank, then you’ll have to search for cruise lines that offer packages at a low cost. Expedition cruises are naturally more expensive than standard ocean cruises, but that doesn’t mean that cruise lines won’t occasionally offer specials and deals. Instead of discounting their itineraries, some cruise lines will include airfare, pre and post hotel stays, or wave single-traveler supplements. These can lead to substantial savings and make an otherwise cost-prohibitive itinerary more realistic. Consider booking your cruise 18-24 months in advance to give yourself plenty of time to make payments and save up for the experience.

If cost is a significant consideration in your decision-making process, and you find a low-cost option, ensure that the low-budget cruise line you choose has a stellar reputation, high-quality programs, and sturdy, well-maintained ships! On the other hand, keep in mind that low-budget cruise lines may have limited programs, inexperienced staff, and dated vessels.

Mid-Range

Guests looking for mid-range expedition cruise lines will be happy to know that the options are plentiful. Mid-budget cruises will still offer high-quality dining, immersive programming, and a wide variety of destinations. Although you may have to forego the butler services and settle for more basic accommodations, reputable mid-range cruises will focus their time and money on securing durable, well-maintained ships, and creating unique, enriching itineraries. If your overall goal is to experience incredible destinations that are otherwise difficult or impossible to reach, a mid-range or deluxe expedition cruise line is a great option.

Luxury

The ultimate kings of the high seas, luxury expedition cruise lines are geared at travelers seeking exceptional service and cuisine, luxuriously appointed rooms, and highly engaging itineraries. There’s nothing a high-budget cruise line can’t offer, from immersive entertainment programs to gourmet cuisine for the most refined taste buds. In addition, these cruises can reach the most remote and isolated destinations on earth, all while serving up champagne and caviar.

Please check Why Travel Belongs in Your Financial Plan.

 Best Expedition Cruise Line

3. Decide On The Cruise Line Company

Like everything else in life and travel, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all expedition cruise line! When talking to your travel advisor about the right expedition cruise line for your adventure, let them know your overall goals, style of travel, budget, and priorities.

“Wilderness is not a luxury but necessity of the human spirit.”
– Edward Abbey

Are you celebrating a milestone anniversary and prefer a small, intimate, luxuriously appointed expedition cruise geared towards mature travelers? Or maybe you’re looking for a lower cost, family-friendly, and child-oriented experience to expose your children to the wonders of the natural world. Many considerations make certain cruise lines ideal for some travelers and completely mismatched for others. So before you head out on a cruise, make sure you choose your company wisely and go with a cruise line that suits your needs.

Some cruise lines are more geared towards adults while others are more family-friendly, so try to pick a cruise line tailored to your travel style. For example, if you don’t mind kids running around or noisy families, then a family expedition cruise line is an excellent choice for you.

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated experience, then you should talk to your travel advisor about finding an adults-only expedition-focused cruise line

If you’re accompanying colleagues and business partners or are looking for a regal experience, then a luxury expedition cruise line is a good fit.

Lastly, if you are looking to book a less arduous and more relaxing expedition experience focused on sightseeing from the comfort of your ship and easy-going shore excursions, ask your travel advisor which expedition cruise lines are best for active adults and seniors. Traveling with elderly loved ones is always a great option! Be sure to check out our tips on how to make traveling with seniors easier!

 Best Expedition Cruise Line

4. Type of Experience: Luxury, Rustic or Adventurous

Everyone has their expectations and desires when on vacation; Some travelers want their onboard experience to be luxurious and highly refined, focused on service, exceptional cuisine, and engaging expedition leaders. Other travelers seek wildly adventurous and exhilarating itineraries and are open to more rustic accommodations. Then there are those of you who want the best of both worlds. That’s why knowing what kind of experience you expect to have and comparing it to the possible choices of cruise lines and itineraries is an important step.

5. Popular Cruise Lines – Top Recommendations

Turkey trip with teens

There is a moment I return to often. It was past 2 a.m., and the Turkish coastline was nothing but a dark silhouette against an even darker sky.

When our family embarked on our summer holiday to Turkey, my 16-year-old son stayed behind to practice water polo, planning to join us midway through the trip. The plot twist: that midpoint happened to fall while we were sailing the Antalya coast aboard a nine-person gulet. The original plan was simple, a driver would collect him from the airport around 9 p.m. and deliver him to a meeting point where he’d rendezvous with our captain.

Then the delays began. He missed his connecting flight, rerouted himself, and didn’t land until nearly 1 a.m. By then, the “meeting location” was a dot in the middle of the Mediterranean, with no proper dock in sight. A local driver took him as far as the road allowed: a pitch-black beach where the only light came from our tiny dinghy’s lantern, bouncing across the waves toward shore.

We picked him up like something out of a spy film, no pier, no lights, just a silhouette wading into the shallows. He climbed aboard laughing, exhausted, and utterly relieved that we’d found him. Grumbling that we were extremely irresponsible parents but also “kinda chill”.

No gift I have ever given my children has matched that memory. No carefully chosen birthday present, no thoughtful holiday surprise, no beautiful object no matter how expensive or meaningful has ever been recounted at family dinners the way that night in Turkey has. This is not a failure of gift-giving. It is a truth about how human beings are wired.

Adventure travel with young kids

Having taken my children to more than 20 countries, I have witnessed firsthand what decades of psychological research now confirms: the gift of travel creates something that material possessions simply cannot replicate. It shapes who our children become, how they think, and what they remember of their childhoods long after the wrapping paper has been forgotten.

The Science of Experiences Over Things

Every photograph reviewed, every story retold, every inside joke referenced at the dinner table years later rekindles the neurological and emotional benefits of the original experience.

The research is unambiguous. Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, has spent more than two decades studying why experiences make people happier than possessions. His findings reveal that the satisfaction we derive from material purchases fades predictably as we adapt to having them, a phenomenon psychologists call hedonic adaptation. The new car becomes just the car. The beautiful watch becomes simply the watch we wear. But experiences, particularly those shared with people we love, become part of our identity in ways that objects never do.

A 2020 study by Dr. Amit Kumar at the University of Texas at Austin reinforced these findings with a critical addition: experiences create more happiness not just during or after the event, but before it as well. His research, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, demonstrated that people report greater satisfaction from experiential purchases irrespective of when happiness is measured. The anticipation of a trip, the trip itself, and the memories afterward all contribute to a sustained sense of wellbeing that material goods simply cannot match.

Adventure travel with kids scuba diving

This brings us to dopamine, the neurotransmitter often called the brain’s “anticipation molecule.” Research from Harvard Business School by Dr. Michael Norton and his colleague Dr. Elizabeth Dunn demonstrates that dopamine is released not only when we receive a reward but when we anticipate it. Planning a vacation activates reward centers in the brain weeks or even months before departure. The excitement of researching destinations, choosing accommodations, and imagining adventures creates measurable increases in happiness. A material gift may spike dopamine briefly upon receipt, but that elevation returns to baseline within weeks. Travel, by contrast, offers three distinct phases of joy: the looking forward, the living through, and the looking back.

This is why the benefits of traveling extend far beyond the trip itself. Every photograph reviewed, every story retold, every inside joke referenced at the dinner table years later rekindles the neurological and emotional benefits of the original experience.

When Things Go Wrong, Everything Goes Right

My grandmother who had lived the first half of her life in the Soviet Union where apparently this was the best and only way to secure holiday accommodations, was unperturbed.

Here is where the research intersects with lived experience in ways that initially seem counterintuitive. The moments we remember most vividly from our travels are rarely the perfect ones. They are the misadventures, the unexpected detours, the situations that required us to adapt, problem-solve, and occasionally laugh at ourselves.

I think of the time we were driving through the Algarve region of Portugal and somehow found ourselves heading the wrong direction down a narrow, winding one-way road. For nearly a mile, we navigated hairpin turns and stone walls, unable to turn around. When we finally realized our error, we had no choice but to reverse the entire distance. We backed slowly, carefully, and ultimately right into a man’s property, where we managed to knock over and shatter his beautiful flower pot. I braced for anger. Instead, he emerged from his house with grace and humor, waving off our apologies with genuine kindness. My children still talk about that man. They do not talk about the perfectly executed days.

Travel in Europe with young children and teens

Or consider our arrival in Split, Croatia traveling with my grandmother and, at the time, two young children. In my younger days I loved using maps, the traditional old-school kind you’ll now likely only find in museums. I was adamant we could navigate without “navigation.”

Instead, we got lost. Went 25 miles in the wrong direction, ran out of phone battery, and arrived exactly in time to miss our boutique hotel’s check-in window. We found ourselves without accommodations in a city at 100% capacity.

No app could solve this. No algorithm stepped in.

So we went old school. While sorting out what to do and trying not to panic, a stranger kindly advised us we were in a pedestrian-only zone and would get a “big ticket.” Then he paused and asked if we needed a place to stay. His grandparents had passed away and left him their apartment; he rented it out to easygoing travelers who needed last-minute accommodations and had apparently never seen a scary movie. My husband was horrified. I was relieved. My grandmother who had lived the first half of her life in the Soviet Union where apparently this was the best and only way to secure holiday accommodations, was unperturbed.

Gift of travel Portugal Azores

He turned out to be extraordinarily helpful and welcoming, walked us to the apartment, gave us directions to the pier we needed to be at early in the morning and did not attempt to rob or murder us.

My children learned something that night about trusting the goodness of people, about adaptability, and about finding solutions in unfamiliar circumstances.

These are the experiences that build what psychologist Angela Duckworth calls “grit” and what author Paul Tough, in his book How Children Succeed, identifies as essential to lifelong achievement. Travel forces children into situations where persistence, resilience, and determination are not abstract concepts but immediate necessities. Research on child development consistently shows that children who encounter and overcome challenges develop stronger problem-solving abilities, greater emotional regulation, and increased confidence in their capacity to handle uncertainty.

What Travel Teaches That Classrooms Cannot

Adults who traveled regularly as children achieved above-average grades, higher educational attainment, and incomes 12% above average

The benefits of travel for kids extend well beyond character building. Cognitive research demonstrates that exposure to novel environments stimulates brain development in ways that familiar settings cannot. When children navigate new places, encounter unfamiliar languages, and adapt to different cultural norms, their brains form new neural pathways. A survey conducted by the Student & Youth Travel Association found that 76% of teachers reported increased cultural awareness in students after travel experiences. More striking still, a comprehensive study by the Travel Effect Project revealed that adults who traveled regularly as children achieved above-average grades, higher educational attainment, and incomes 12% above average compared to their less-traveled peers.

I witnessed this directly when I fell ill during a trip to Italy last month, and my children, now teenagers, had to navigate a day trip to Florence entirely on their own. They missed their first train because they had never navigated the European rail system before. They had to purchase new tickets with limited language skills. Hours of delays followed. But they made it. When they returned that evening, exhausted and proud, they had gained something no classroom could have provided: the lived experience of their own accomplishment.

Kids traveling in Austria

When my daughter was bitten by a tick while hiking in Austria, we faced the challenge of navigating European medical systems as outsiders. It was stressful in the moment. In retrospect, it was education in the deepest sense: an understanding that healthcare works differently in different places, that asking for help in an unfamiliar context requires courage, and that problems can be solved even when the rulebook is written in another language.

While stress-free family vacations are more enjoyable in the moment, having to pivot, adapt and overcome challenges actually cultivates new skills: not despite the stress but because of how families learn to manage it together.

The Nostalgia That Objects Cannot Evoke

There is a reason we do not gather around the coffee table to reminisce about the television we bought in 2015. Material possessions, no matter how beautiful or thoughtfully chosen, lack the narrative arc that memories require. They do not have a beginning, middle, and end. They do not feature characters, conflict, or resolution. They simply exist until they are replaced.

Thailand with kids

Travel, by contrast, is story. And the research on memory formation explains why these stories endure. Novel experiences are encoded more deeply because they require more cognitive processing. The brain pays closer attention when the environment is unfamiliar. This is why adults can recall details from childhood trips with startling clarity while forgetting entire years of routine. Memories shaped by strong feelings often become permanently etched in our minds. v

My children remember the taste of street food in Mexico. They remember the sound of waves against the dinghy in Turkey. They remember the expression on the Portuguese man’s face when we broke his flower pot and the relief when he smiled. These memories are not static. They evolve with each retelling, becoming richer and more meaningful as my children grow old enough to understand what they were actually learning in those moments.

A Different Kind of Investment

Children who travel learn this lesson viscerally. They learn that frustration is temporary, that problems have solutions, and that the discomfort of unfamiliarity is the price of growth.

The gift of travel is, in a meaningful sense, an investment. But unlike financial investments, the returns are not measured in currency. They are measured in perspective, in adaptability, in the capacity to feel at home in unfamiliar places. Research consistently shows that children exposed to diverse cultures develop greater empathy, stronger social competence, and more flexible thinking patterns.

For parents and grandparents considering how to invest in the young people they love, the evidence points clearly toward experiences. International family vacations are not luxuries reserved for a privileged few. They are formative experiences that shape how children understand themselves and their place in a complex world.

Kids traveling in Austria and Croatia

This is why we run marathons, sign up for difficult courses, and train for challenges that will test us. The accomplishment means more when it was hard.

Children who travel learn this lesson viscerally. They learn that frustration is temporary, that problems have solutions, and that the discomfort of unfamiliarity is the price of growth.

Planning Your Next Chapter

For families ready to embrace the gift of travel, the first step is simply to begin. Choose a destination that will stretch your family slightly beyond the familiar. Involve your children in the planning process, which itself activates those anticipatory dopamine pathways. Accept that things will go wrong and recognize that those moments may become the trip’s most valuable gifts.

Consider destinations that offer both adventure and education, places where history comes alive and where daily routines will be meaningfully disrupted. The top destinations for family travel are not necessarily the most exotic. They are the places that will challenge your family to grow together.

The Role of Expert Guidance

Europe with young kids

Navigating international travel with children requires thoughtfulness, and this is where working with a luxury travel advisor becomes invaluable. At Boutique Travel Advisors, we understand that family travel is about more than logistics. It is about creating conditions for transformation. We handle the complexity so you can focus on what matters: being present with your children as they discover the world.

The greatest gift we can give our children is not something that can be wrapped. It is the confidence that comes from solving problems, the empathy that grows from encountering differences, and the memories that will warm them for a lifetime. That gift is travel. And unlike any object, it only becomes more valuable with time.

Private jets landing on secluded airstrips. Champagne breakfasts atop volcanic craters. An entire safari vehicle reserved solely to capture the rarest sight in nature — the gleaming eyes of a black leopard beneath a Laikipia moon.

Africa has long defined adventure, but today, it defines ultra-luxury. Across its vast savannahs, misty mountains, and turquoise archipelagos, a new era of travel has emerged — one that blends wildness with exclusivity, sustainability with indulgence, and discovery with design.

At Boutique Travel Advisors, we invite you to experience Africa through a lens few ever glimpse. Through our Africa Luxury Travel Club, we craft rare, meaningful journeys for travelers who seek more than a safari — those who crave connection, transformation, and story-worthy moments found nowhere else on earth.

What Defines Ultra-Luxury in Africa

Luxury in Africa has always been different. It’s not about marble floors or chandeliered lobbies — it’s about time, space, silence, and the privilege of intimacy with nature.

An ultra-luxury safari reimagines adventure at its highest level:

  • Rarity – Experiences accessible to only a handful of travelers, such as private gorilla trekking permits or rare photographic safaris in Kenya’s remote highlands.
  • Privacy – Personalized charters, private guides, and exclusive-use lodges where the wilderness is entirely yours.
  • Adventure – Helicopter safaris, volcanic landings, fly-in dune picnics, and bush dinners that redefine what exploration feels like.
  • Impact – Conservation-centered travel that funds anti-poaching patrols, supports wildlife research, and empowers local communities.

The Best of Africa: 5 Unforgettable Journeys That Define True Luxury

“True luxury in Africa is not about what you own — it’s about the moments that own you.”

  1. The Black Leopard of Laikipia, Kenya

The Best of Africa: 5 Unforgettable Journeys That Define True Luxury

There are few wildlife sightings in the world that stop even seasoned travelers in their tracks — but spotting the black leopard of Laikipia is one of them.

Nicknamed Giza, this elusive feline has captured global fascination. Unlike fleeting encounters elsewhere, Giza is unusually relaxed around vehicles, offering photographers and adventurers a chance to witness one of the world’s rarest animals up close.

This experience unfolds in Kenya’s Laikipia wilderness, a privately protected expanse of rolling plateaus and rugged escarpments. Access requires private charters and exclusive-use concessions, often reserved for guests at Sirai House, Arijiju House, or Segera Retreat — sanctuaries where design, wellness, and conservation blend seamlessly.

Imagine days spent tracking Giza with specialist guides, evenings shared around a fire under constellations unseen in the northern hemisphere, and nights in a villa where the only walls are those of nature itself.

  1. Private Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda & Uganda

In the shadow of mist-wrapped volcanoes dwell the last mountain gorillas on earth — fewer than a thousand remain.

While traditional treks limit daily visitors, Boutique Travel Advisors curates private gorilla experiences that elevate exclusivity and emotion. Helicopter directly from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, where a dedicated ranger and porter team await to guide you through ancient bamboo forests.

Stay at Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Bisate Lodge, or One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, where handwoven textures meet avant-garde architecture, and every stay contributes to reforestation and community upliftment.

As the mist lifts and your eyes meet theirs, time stops. The experience is deeply personal — less about luxury as comfort, and more about luxury as connection.

  1. Helicopter Adventures Across Africa’s Wild Frontiers

A helicopter safari is Africa’s most cinematic experience — one that transforms the landscape into a moving masterpiece.

  • Botswana’s Okavango Delta – Stay at Mombo Camp, Jao Camp, or Xigera Safari Lodge, and soar over mirror-like floodplains where elephants wade through silver channels. Land on a private island for a champagne brunch or a sleep-out beneath a galaxy of stars.
  • Tanzania’s Northern Highlands – From Singita Sasakwa Lodge or Mwiba Lodge, lift off toward the sacred Ol Doinyo Lengai — the “Mountain of God.” Touch down on the crater rim for sunrise champagne before continuing to Lake Natron’s flamingo-lined shores.
  • Kenya’s Peaks & Plains – Depart from Angama Mara or Segera Retreat and glide over Mount Kenya’s glaciers, picnic beside alpine lakes, then descend into Samburu’s wild canyons for an entirely new perspective of East Africa’s drama.

Each flight is a private revelation — a reminder that Africa’s vastness can only be truly understood from above.

  1. Sleep Beneath the Stars: Romance Reimagined

The Best of Africa: 5 Unforgettable Journeys That Define True Luxury

There’s nothing more enchanting than drifting to sleep under the African sky.

At Lion Sands or Tswalu Kalahari’s Malori Deck, star-bed suites offer open-air sanctuaries where nature becomes your luxury suite. Lanterns flicker softly, the air hums with life, and your ceiling is a canopy of a billion stars.

Further north, Loisaba Star Beds in Kenya and Jao Camp Skybeds in Botswana elevate the experience — literal platforms for intimacy and reflection suspended above the wilderness.

This is romance stripped to its essence: the thrill of solitude, the rhythm of the wild, and the rare peace that comes from knowing you are exactly where you’re meant to be.

“Here, your ceiling is the universe — and your nightlight is the Southern Cross.”

  1. From Safari to Sea: Africa’s Ultimate Pairing

After days of adventure, Africa’s coastline offers its own rhythm — a slow, sunlit interlude of barefoot luxury.

  • Seychelles – Escape to North Island or Six Senses Zil Pasyon, where private villas melt into granite cliffs and every sunrise feels newly discovered. Arrive by helicopter, indulge in oceanfront dining, and unwind with spa rituals inspired by the tides.
  • Tanzania & Mozambique – Discover Thanda Island and Kisawa Sanctuary, two of the most exclusive retreats in the Indian Ocean. Expect private chefs, yacht charters, coral reef diving, and sustainability woven into every design choice.
  • Cape Town & Winelands – Conclude your journey at Ellerman House or Leeu Estates, pairing world-class art collections, fine wines, and dramatic Atlantic views — a sophisticated end to a wild beginning.

“Wake to lions at dawn, sleep to the sound of the sea — only Africa can offer both dreams in a single journey.”

Luxury with Purpose

At Boutique Travel Advisors, we believe that true luxury doesn’t exist without purpose. Through our Africa Luxury Travel Club, every itinerary goes beyond indulgence — it empowers and preserves.

Each journey contributes to Africa’s greater story: supporting anti-poaching units, funding rhino dehorning operations, empowering women artisans, and sustaining conservation-led tourism that safeguards wild spaces for generations to come.

“Every private trek, every helicopter flight, every lodge stay should give back to the land that gives us so much.”

10. Game Of Throne:

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones

For those of us who spent years arduously following the convoluted plotlines, dragon tales, white walker attacks, unexpected births, deaths, and marriages of one of the most popular TV shows ever created, Croatia is a fan mecca. But, of course, the Game of Thrones world wasn’t made in a movie studio.

King’s Landing, the setting of much of the show’s plotline, is almost entirely filmed in the genuine UNESCO World Heritage city of Dubrovnik.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that it has drawn thousands of anxious fans to its borders since the show’s inception. But can you pick out the scenes featuring the city walls? First, go early in the morning on a guided experience to beat the heat and crowds. Then, you can climb the stone steps for a small fee and walk the entire city’s circumference, which offers a spectacular view of the historic rooftops and the Adriatic Sea glistening in the background. You may even spot Tyrion broodingly contemplating his allegiances in the distance.

For those of you looking to connect with the character’s plights a bit more closely, follow the path of Cersei’s atonement walk along the Jesuit Stairs located off of St. Dominika Street. After purchasing your very own “Shame Bell,” you can head out to the Tresteno Arboretum and walk the gardens of the Red Keep. Can you name the alliances forged and broken amidst the flowering trees and romantic paths?

After you have thoroughly explored the central filming locations, head out to find the holy grail of the show, you guessed it, the Iron throne! Located on the island of Lokrum, the most important symbol of the show can be seen in a small museum, a short 15-minute ferry ride from the Old City’s main port.

9. Historical Sights:

Diocletian's Palace

Both the Ancient Greeks and Romans settled Croatia and subsequently defended against Venetians and Ottomans. From the Istrian Peninsula to Dalmatia, visitors will find over 2,000 years of the tumultuous and often brutal history.

The most easily accessible and famous sight is Diocletian’s Palace, located in Split and built around 300 ACE. Walk through historical ruins in the main square of Peristil and find yourself transported back in time. Pass relics that were brought in throughout the centuries and preserved in various stages as the city grew and evolved. Some exciting sights include an ancient Egyptian sphinx from Luxor, the Temple of Jupiter, and Diocletian’s mausoleum, which was later transformed into the Split Cathedral. However, perhaps the most fascinating thing is that Diocletian’s Palace is still home to a community of residents who own shops, hotels, and restaurants within the palace walls.

Take a private Split history and foodie tour or a highlights tour to experience the city through the eyes of a historian.

If you skipped over the Game of Thrones facts, you might have missed the part about Dubrovnik’s City Walls. These beautifully preserved and incredibly symbolic architectural masterpieces were built in the mid-1300s after liberation from the Venetians as a necessity for protection from further attacks. They were created to withstand time but also represent wealth and beauty. While most people choose to spend a few nights in Dubrovnik, doing a day trip visit from Split is also possible with a great guided itinerary.

Some other incredible sights include the well-preserved Roman-era Pula Amphitheater, the 13th century Trogir Cathedral and the walls of Ston.

8. Zagreb:

Zagreb

Although the city doesn’t make most people’s radar aside from a place to fly in and out of, it’s worthy of a couple of days of your time. This large yet quaint and safe city offers unlimited possibilities for music and theatre events, art exhibitions, museums, dining, and quintessential European strolling in the spacious pedestrian zones and over 30 parks. A perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside and getting off the beaten path. Zagreb certainly qualifies as one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia.

7. National Parks:

Krka National Park

While it’s true that most visitors come to Croatia for the infamous beaches and islands, in the know travelers recognized that Croatia is known for offering s a cornucopia of outdoor adventures with stunning mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and wild forests.

The countries’ eight national parks are hugely popular with European travelers in Summer but largely quiet the rest of the year.

Visit during the spring to see wildflowers blanketing the hillsides. Come in autumn for gorgeous foliage. Or venture out to explore snow-covered trees and the magical silence of winter.

Kornati Islands Natioanl Park

One of the most interesting Parks is the Kornati Islands, located just off the coast between Zadar and Sibenik and are 140 separate islands. Although off the radar for most tourists, they are pretty famous in the yachting world for being one of the best sailing destinations in Europe with calm waters and relaxing winds. Sail from Zadar or take a speedboat tour.

Krka National Park

If swimming through waterfalls is your idea of a perfect day, then a visit to Krka National Park, whose claim to fame is the multi-tiered wedding cake waterfall of Skradinski Buk, is a must. Spend the first part of the trip taking the trail uphill, which heads to the top of the waterfall for gorgeous photo-ops, then through the upper sections where wooden platforms have been set up to allow walking over the rivers. Finally, end your day trip with a swim under the waterfalls in the beautiful crystal clear water. Visit Krka on a relaxing day trip from Zadar.

Mljet National Park

Dubrovnik to Mljet National Park offers another fantastic day tip option. Located in the northwestern section of Mljet Island, the park includes two salt lakes, with the larger Veliko Jezero showcasing a Benedictine monastery. Spend a quiet day kayaking, cycling, hiking, and swimming. As motor vehicles are forbidden anywhere in the national park, it retains its sense of solitude and romance even in peak season. Take a boating day trip from Dubrovnik and experience it firsthand.

6. Plitvice Lakes National Park:

Plitvice Lakes

Yes, we recognize that this is another National Park. However, Plitvice Lakes deserves its section. This mountain wonderland is a spectacular feat of nature, showcasing 16 interconnected lakes linked by rivers and waterfalls. The best way to see this area is overnight but many travelers make do with a long but worthwhile day trip from Split

High in minerals, the lakes are constantly changing colors, appearing emerald green one moment, cobalt, aquamarine, or cerulean the next depending on how the light hits them.

Spend a few hours walking on wooden pathways over the crystal water while being surrounded by waterfalls and extensive wild forests. There are two main trails in the park. Trail A circles the two lower lakes, descending from the cliff tops down and crossing one of the lakes on a wooden platform before climbing up again. Trail B follows the same path but also reaches Kozjak lake, the largest lake in Plitvice. A boat will take you across the lake for a short scenic ride, and a small train will take you back towards entrance 1 to complete the visit.

Note: Trail K, which is over 18 km long, can take you to the top of the northernmost upper lake. This is a spectacular hike that takes around 8 hours to complete. Plan to spend the night in the area if you are hiking Trail K. Check the official Plitvice site for more information.

Although definitely “out of the way” from most main tourist hubs, a visit to Croatia would be incomplete without visiting a world wonder. Spend a night or take a day trip from Zagreb or Split. The trails are extremely well marked and easily navigated, and this park is ideal for strolling at leisure. Plitvice Lakes is absolutely one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia.

The Food:

Croatian cuisine

Traditional Croatian cuisine is wide and varied, yet thoroughly infused with Mediterranean flavors influenced by neighboring countries and nations which have ruled the territories over the centuries.

Epicureans will note similarities with Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, and even Turkish cuisine. Yet, Croatian dishes have their own unique and distinct flavors, which vary from region to region.

Along the Dalmatian coast and islands, the cuisine is based heavily on the Mediterranean diet, heavy in fish, salads, and olive oil. However, if you venture closer to Zagreb, the flavors change to central European countries with meat, potatoes, and cabbage. The Istrian peninsula has more exciting and varied dishes like manestra, a bean soup prepared only in Istria, or fuzi, a hand-rolled pasta.

Traditional dishes which will tantalize your taste buds:

Crni rizot: Found in nearly every seafood restaurant in Croatia, this black squid risotto typically contains mussels, clams, and other shellfish. This is a must-try!

Pasticada: Baby beef fillet, marinated in wine vinegar for several days before being braised for hours, first in its juice, and later with red wine, this prevalent Dalmatian dish is served with homemade gnocchi.

Skampi na buzaru: A traditional seafood scampi with muscles, shrimp, or clams.

Strukli: Somewhat similar to a pirogi this is a pastry filled with cottage cheese and sour cream. Served mainly in the region around Zagreb.

Punjene paprike: More common in Turkish cuisine the Croatian variation of stuffed peppers includes minced meat, rice, and spices, cooked with tomato sauce.

Fritule: Another favorite dessert these dough balls are made with flour, raisins, lemon zest, and schnapps, and of course, deep-fried

Arancini: These are traditional Croatian desserts made of candied orange peels.

Krostule: This delicious deep-fried dough is sprinkled with powder sugar and melts in your mouth.

4. Scuba Diving:

Croatia scuba diving

Blessed with an entire coastline of crystal clear Adriatic water, it should come as no surprise that Croatia offers divers a plethora of diving opportunities. In addition, around 1000 islands found off the coast in Croatia are adorned with canyons, reefs, underwater caverns, and chilling shipwrecks. So spend a day, a week, or a lifetime island hopping in search of your hidden corner of underwater paradise.

Dives around the island of Vis offer WWI and WWII shipwrecks fallen in battle as well as a B-17 bomber. The gulf of Kvarner to the North is known for amazing wall dives and rocky reefs covered with beautiful gorgonians. If you are interested in exploring the Blue Cave, head to Bisevo. The cave is accessible only via small boats.

3. Dubrovnik:

Dubrovnik

We simply can’t get enough of the city dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” If historical sites and filming locations did not entice you, the city offers various cultural activities and festivals. Stroll the picturesque streets and alleyways, admire the splendid cathedral and treasury, grab a bite to eat, and visit art galleries featuring both modern and traditional works of art.

Start your day early, climb the steps to the city walls, and head over to the infamous, pedestrian-only Pile Gate, which served as the main entry point to the old city. Built in 1537 and formerly surrounded by a moat and complete with a drawbridge, it is as scenic as historic.

Afterward, take a stroll over to the once Grandiose fountain of Onofrio. (Somewhat smaller today than the original due to damage in the earthquake of 1667). After lunch, make sure to visit the beautiful Dubrovnik Cathedral-also referred to as the Assumption Cathedral. The highlights here are paintings by Italian and Dalmatian artists from the 16th to 18th centuries.

One of the most prominent pieces in the Assumption Cathedral is the beautiful painting of the assumption of Mary, done by Titian around 1552. Other relics include a portion of Jesus’ crucifixion cross and the head, leg, and arm of St. Blaise from the 13th century.

After a day of touring, head to the spectacular Stradun, one of Europe’s most picturesque pedestrian thoroughfares. It is lined with cafés and restaurants, so pick a spot to rest and people watch over an espresso. Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and one of the top sights in Croatia.

2. Croatia’s Islands:

Ok, so there is a reason that most tourists understand that Croatia is known for the stunning coastline, clear waters, and plethora of islands. However, the most challenging task is choosing which of the 1000 islands to see and which ones to skip over. Although primarily based on personal preferences, these are the top 5 islands that would appease even the most discerning islands hopper. Each of these islands qualifies as one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia, but you will have difficulty choosing just one.

If you only have a day explore the Croatian coast by private boat from Split to get a taste of this magical region.

Hvar:

Hvar

A truly sophisticated place to see and be seen. This glamorous jewel is akin to St. Tropez, full of beautiful shops, streets, and people. While known as a celebrity and party-goer hot spot, it is also full of hidden coves, romantic vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields, and an incredibly preserved Španjola fortress. Hvar is undoubtedly one of the top sights in Croatia.

Consider taking a cruise that includes a stopover at Hvar to experience the region and get a taste of the different islands.

Brac:

Most people visit Brac to spend time on its famous beach ‘Zlatni Rat.’ However, there is so much more to see and do. Take a 50-minute ferry journey from Split, and discover this low-key happy place. From beaches emerging like secret gifts from the pine forests to secluded bays and up to Vidova Gora, the highest peak in the Croatian islands, you can spend weeks exploring and relaxing. In addition, there are several towns complete with romantic squares, fountains, cobblestone streets, phenomenal restaurants, and fun bars.

Elaphiti Islands:

These quiet and relaxing islands are well connected to Dubrovnik by ferries and can be reached in 30- 50 minutes. They make an ideal escape from the hustle of Dubrovnik and can be visited on day trips or for a weekend getaway. Make sure to visit Sipan Island, which boasts its own (rare) sandy beach, and spend a day strolling the wonderfully traffic-free Lopud.

Korcula:

This historical island claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. It is reminiscent of a mini-Dubrovnik with a beautiful old town and outstanding gothic and romantic architecture examples. Spend your days exploring the various beaches, kayaking along the shores, snorkeling in the clear warm water, or wine tasting with local sommeliers. Tip; Korcula is well known for its very own crisp white wine.

Mljet:

We have already covered Mljet in the national park section. This island is a favorite with nature lovers, hikers, and visitors searching for quiet seclusion. Most visitors come for day trips. Therefore evenings are usually crowd-free, even in the peak season. Best experienced by multi-day sailing trips.

Interesting Fact: This is where Odysseus spent seven years frolicking with his nymph Calypso.

1. The People:

A top 10 list for this country would not be complete without a nod to the people that have made it one of our favorite countries in Europe. Beautiful inside and out, Croatian’s are known for their warmth, hospitality, and friendliness. Whether spending a week island hopping, traveling with friends, family, or even on a solo journey, you will find that you leave with so much more love, appreciation, and friendships than you came with or could have ever hoped for.

Croatia is one of the most incredible destinations in Europe. While there is plenty to see and do, many visitors choose to combine their trip with a visit to other countries. If you want to explore the region in more depth, we recommend visiting Italy, Greece, or France.

Where to Stay in Croatia Our Favorite Hotels with VIP Perks:

  1. Zagreb – Esplenade Zagreb: A historic property opened in 1925 and a haven for A-listers and movie stars.

Africa offers something no other destination can: authentic adventure that’s both wild and welcoming.

The continent’s finest lodges have perfected the art of balance — pairing world-class design with personalized flexibility. Whether it’s toddlers discovering their first elephant, parents enjoying a sunset gin and tonic, or grandparents sharing safari tales from decades past, every generation finds its rhythm here.

What makes a family safari truly special:

Timeless Bonds: The Magic of Multi-Generational Safaris in Africa

  • Exclusive-Use Villas: Private homes and lodges with personal chefs, guides, and vehicles.
  • Tailored Experiences: Activities adjusted for every age, from wildlife walks to spa days.
  • Seamless Logistics: Charter flights, private transfers, and custom itineraries.
  • Education Through Discovery: Conservation encounters that spark curiosity and empathy in young travelers.
  1. Singita Serengeti House – Tanzania

Perched on Sasakwa Hill within the private Grumeti Reserve, Singita Serengeti House is a sanctuary for families who value both privacy and possibility.

This exclusive-use villa features four suites, a private pool, a full staff, and views that stretch endlessly over the plains. Each day is tailored — morning drives to follow the Great Migration, tennis on the hilltop court, or photography lessons with Singita’s expert guides.

Evenings bring candlelit dinners under the acacia trees and storytelling by the fire — moments that become family legend.

  1. Sirai House – Kenya

Set on the Borana Conservancy beneath Mount Kenya, Sirai House redefines the concept of “home away from home.”

Built from local stone and wood, the six-bedroom villa hosts families seeking total seclusion. Guests have access to private helicopters, horses, and guided safaris across one of Kenya’s most pristine landscapes.

Children learn wildlife tracking and horseback riding; adults can unwind in the spa or sample vintages from the stone-arched wine cellar. The black leopard of Laikipia roams nearby — a thrilling reminder that this is still the wild, even when every comfort surrounds you.

  1. Morukuru Family – South Africa

For families with younger children, the Morukuru Family Collection in Madikwe Game Reserve offers the perfect blend of adventure and ease.

Each villa — whether Owner’s House, River House, or Farm House — comes with a personal team including chef, butler, and guide. Kids can join “bush school,” learning about insects and animal tracks, while grandparents relax with sundowners on the terrace.

It’s an environment where every generation feels at home, and where laughter carries across the plains.

  1. Zarafa Dhow Suites – Botswana

Timeless Bonds: The Magic of Multi-Generational Safaris in Africa

In the heart of the Selinda Reserve, Zarafa Dhow Suites embodies understated elegance and absolute privacy.

This two-bedroom villa, crafted from reclaimed dhow wood, includes its own chef, guide, and vehicle. Days begin with elephants crossing the lagoon and end with candlelit dinners beside a crackling fire.

For multi-generational groups, Zarafa creates the rhythm of connection — space for solitude when desired, and togetherness when it matters most.

  1. Segera Retreat – Kenya

At Segera, art, agriculture, and adventure coexist in perfect harmony.

Families stay in thatched villas surrounded by botanical gardens, where conservation takes center stage. Children help plant trees or learn about endangered species, while parents explore by helicopter or bike through acacia woodlands.

Evenings are spent at the wine tower or in the sculpture garden, where storytelling, art, and conservation come together.

  1. Tswalu Tarkuni Homestead – South Africa

Set within the vast red dunes of the Kalahari, Tswalu Tarkuni Homestead offers rare privacy in a malaria-free environment — ideal for families.

This five-suite villa includes a private vehicle, tracker, and chef, ensuring complete flexibility. Young explorers can visit meerkat colonies at dawn or learn survival skills from expert trackers, while grandparents enjoy spa treatments or guided stargazing sessions.

Every stay contributes to Tswalu’s conservation projects, teaching future generations the value of protecting wilderness.

  1. Chem Chem Lodge – Tanzania

Timeless Bonds: The Magic of Multi-Generational Safaris in Africa

Where Lake Manyara meets Tarangire National Park lies Chem Chem Lodge, a sanctuary that celebrates slowness and connection.

Here, families rediscover the joy of unhurried time. Walk with Maasai warriors, share picnics beneath ancient baobabs, or practice yoga as giraffes graze nearby.

The philosophy is simple yet profound: luxury is not about excess, but about presence.

  1. Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge – South Africa

Sculpted into the earth itself, Earth Lodge is a marvel of design and emotion — perfect for families with older children or adult generations traveling together.

Between spa treatments and wine-cellar dinners, guests embark on expert-guided drives through one of the most wildlife-rich reserves in Africa. Leopard sightings here are legendary, and evenings often end around a private boma fire, where stories flow as freely as South African wine.

  1. Royal Chundu Island Lodge – Zambia

Suspended between river and sky, Royal Chundu sits on the banks of the Zambezi River just upstream from Victoria Falls.

Two private villas accommodate families seeking adventure with elegance — kayaking, fishing, and helicopter flights over the Falls by day, lantern-lit dining by night.

Children learn from local communities, weaving stories of the Zambezi into their own family heritage.

  1. Thanda Island – Tanzania

End your African odyssey on your own private island.

Thanda Island hosts one family at a time — a paradise of coral reefs, palm-fringed beaches, and barefoot freedom. The island’s team includes a private chef, yacht captain, and marine biologist.

Days unfold in the Indian Ocean — snorkeling with whale sharks, playing beach volleyball, or enjoying a sunset barbecue on the sand. It’s the ultimate multi-generational finale — adventure, connection, and peace in perfect harmony.

Why Families Fall in Love with Africa

Beyond the wildlife and luxury, what families remember most are the moments.
The child who spots their first lion. The laughter shared over a muddy safari vehicle. The quiet pride of a grandparent watching three generations discover the world together.

Africa slows time. It invites you to be fully present, to reconnect not only with one another but with the earth itself.

Luxury That Gives Back

Every Boutique Travel Advisors journey supports Africa’s communities and ecosystems.
From rhino protection projects in Kenya to education initiatives in Tanzania, our multi-generational safaris teach families that true luxury is about giving back.

Children leave with more than souvenirs — they carry an understanding of stewardship and gratitude.

Your Family’s Next Great Story

Timeless Bonds: The Magic of Multi-Generational Safaris in Africa

For families who have cruised the Mediterranean, skied the Alps, or explored the Caribbean, Africa offers something profoundly different.

Here, the landscapes are wild, the experiences transformative, and the bonds everlasting.

This is where legacies are created — not through things, but through shared adventure.

Reconnect. Rediscover. Reimagine the world together.
Begin your family’s once-in-a-lifetime journey with the Africa Luxury Travel Club — where wilderness, wonder, and legacy meet.

  1. Singita Sasakwa Lodge – Tanzania

Perched high above the Serengeti plains, Singita Sasakwa Lodge feels more like an Edwardian manor than a safari lodge. Crystal chandeliers, polished antiques, and sweeping views of the Great Migration create an atmosphere of refined grandeur.

Guests enjoy private villas with infinity pools, guided game drives across 350,000 acres of protected wilderness, and the timeless beauty of the Serengeti as their private stage.

  1. Angama Mara – Kenya

Floating above the Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is one of Africa’s most cinematic properties — literally built on the site made famous by Out of Africa.

Every glass-fronted suite overlooks the Mara Triangle, where the migration thunders below. Private picnics on the hill, Maasai-led walking safaris, and custom photography workshops redefine romance and adventure.

  1. Royal Malewane – South Africa

Tucked inside Greater Kruger, Royal Malewane blends old-world glamour with frontier spirit.

Think claw-foot bathtubs overlooking the bush, world-class cuisine from Chef John Jackson, and one of Africa’s most qualified guiding teams. For families or small groups, The Farmstead and Waterside offer exclusive-use privacy paired with flawless service.

  1. Mombo Camp – Botswana

Often called “The Place of Plenty,” Mombo Camp sits at the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta — one of the richest ecosystems on Earth.

Rebuilt with cutting-edge sustainability, Mombo offers palatial tented suites raised on decks with uninterrupted wildlife views. Helicopter transfers, candlelit dinners under the stars, and exceptional guiding make it a safari legend for good reason.

  1. Bisate Lodge – Rwanda

A masterpiece of eco-luxury, Bisate Lodge sits on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, where guests trek to meet Rwanda’s iconic mountain gorillas.

Each villa — designed like a weaverbird’s nest — overlooks misty peaks and reforested hills. From wine tastings by the fire to guided walks through rewilded terrain, Bisate redefines sustainable elegance.

  1. Arijiju House – Kenya

Hidden within Laikipia’s Borana Conservancy, Arijiju House feels like an African monastery sculpted into the landscape.

This exclusive-use villa combines Swahili-inspired architecture, a private spa, organic cuisine, and a strong focus on conservation. With just a handful of guests at a time, it’s one of the most private retreats in Africa — perfect for multi-generational families or high-profile travelers.

  1. Xigera Safari Lodge – Botswana

A member of Red Carnation Hotels, Xigera Safari Lodge is a love letter to African art and design. Every piece of furniture was handmade by local artisans, and the result is part gallery, part sanctuary.

Guests can explore the Okavango’s channels by mokoro (traditional canoe), unwind in the spa, or dine beside sculptural firepits under the Delta’s starlit canopy.

  1. Singita Kwitonda Lodge – Rwanda

Just beyond Bisate, Singita Kwitonda blends volcanic landscapes with minimalist design and deep purpose.

Built with volcanic rock and reclaimed wood, its suites open to the Virunga Mountains. Guests can spend mornings with gorillas and afternoons learning about Singita’s reforestation initiative — proof that luxury and sustainability can be one and the same.

  1. Tswalu The Motse – South Africa

Set within South Africa’s largest private reserve, Tswalu The Motse invites guests into the red dunes of the Kalahari — where meerkats stand sentry and the air shimmers with solitude.

Each villa offers endless desert views, open-air showers, and access to private vehicles and guides. Guests can take scenic flights over the dunes, dine under desert skies, and support groundbreaking wildlife research during their stay.

  1. North Island – Seychelles

The ultimate safari finale lies not on land, but in the sea. North Island is the private-island escape of dreams — where guests arrive by helicopter, greeted by turquoise lagoons, pristine beaches, and a level of privacy reserved for royalty.

With just 11 villas and a staff-to-guest ratio that redefines service, it’s the perfect complement to any African safari — barefoot luxury at its purest.

Hawaii might have a small landmass compared to the mainland United States, but it is full of incredible things to do, and amazing places to stay. If you identify yourself as an adventurer, you will find even more to do across the islands of Hawaii. Finding the best adventures in Hawaii is key when planning a trip to the islands.

Whether it be on the rim of a volcano, diving into the deep blue of the island’s tropical waters, or delving into the tropical rainforest, there is an adventure waiting around every corner. Here are some of our favorite recommendations for the best adventures in Hawaii.

Our Top 13 Best Adventurous in Hawaii :

Hike Volcanoes

1. Hike Among Volcanoes

Hawaii features close access to some of the world’s most incredible landforms, volcanoes. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park sits on the Big Island. It includes an active volcano along with miles of lava tubes stretching throughout the Park. There are even ancient petroglyphs in certain parts of the park.

The biggest draw to this park is that it is one of the few places in the world where you can actively witness the creation of land. The active volcanos on this island are currently not considered dangerous, but keep an eye out if that changes.

Another great option for hiking a volcano is available in Maui. Here the infamous dormant volcano, Haleakala, which formed over 1 million years ago has been a sacred location for Polynesian people for centuries. Get an early start and ascend to an elevation of 9,740 feet to witness the sunrise. For those of you who aren’t early risers, the sunset hiking tour of Haleakala is equally impressive.

2. Take a Helicopter Tour

The fascinating and unique geology of these islands makes them fascinating to see from above. Helicopter tours will take you above almost any of the islands and oceans that make up Hawaii.

Maui is arguably one of the best to see from above since it features lush rainforests with hidden gems like waterfalls and hidden pools. In addition, the helicopters usually have six or fewer seats if you want to go with your family or loved ones. It is important to plan any Maui trip during the right seasons, when planning a trip to Maui, we have several tips.

Scuba Diving

3. Dive with Manta Rays

Manta rays make the area around Hawaii their home for most of the year because of the hordes of plankton present around the Big Island. They specifically frequent a bay north of Kailua-Kona. They come to each night, and snorkelers and licensed divers come nightly to watch them feed, many say this is their favorite of the best adventures in Hawaii.

The local companies have set up spotlights on the ocean floor to attract even more plankton. These spotlights also help make the manta rays even more apparent in the water.

Waterfalls

4. Kayak to Secret Waterfall

Kayaking is a beautiful sport to do almost anywhere in the world with lakes or rivers. However, it is even more majestic in a location like Hawaii. Many adventurers recommend heading to Kauai, the garden island, to kayak into some hidden waterfalls.

Many take the route up the Wailua River to take in mountain scenery towards Wailua Canyon. Waterfalls can bring a sense of wellness to travelers, which can be very important during any major vacation.

5. Snorkel with Sea Turtles

Snorkeling is one of the most common of the best adventures in Hawaii, and you can do on almost any island. You don’t have to have any training to do this, unlike scuba diving. Maui is a popular snorkeling destination but you can even snorkel among the sea turtles in an area of Kauai called the Tunnels.

Lava tubes created tunnels and caves under the water. They are home to more than just sea turtles as well, giving you the experience of interacting with all kinds of sea life.

Kalalau Trail

6. Hike the Kalalau Trail

The Kalalau Trail is one of the top 10 things to do in all of Hawaii. On the island of Kauai, the trail is arguably one of the most breathtaking trails in the world. The hike gives you stunning views of the island’s coastline and looks down into volcanically formed valleys. Although it is classed as a strenuous hike, it is well worth getting to an otherwise hard-to-reach part of the island.

7. Snorkel in Molokini Crater

One of the other top snorkeling places that we had to call attention to in Hawaii is the Molokini Crater. It is a partially submerged crater of a volcano. The above-water portion forms a stunning crescent that plays into ancient Hawaiian mythology. Nowadays, though, the crater has become one of the world’s top snorkeling and diving destinations.

8. Get Your Kicks Racing in the Honolulu Marathon

If you like to wrack up races worldwide, the Honolulu Marathon is one to add to your list. It is one of the top activities on Oahu and will be a star in your running career. It also gives you a great way to explore the island since you run 26.2 miles around it. The race happens every year on the second Sunday in December.

9. Visit the Cat Sanctuary

Visiting cats might not seem like the most adventurous thing you could do on an adventure holiday. However, visiting the cat sanctuary on Lanai gives you the chance to get to one of the tiny islands of Hawaii. In addition, you will find it easier to breathe on the smaller islands since many aren’t as visited as the primary islands.

The feral cats have been relocated to the sanctuary to help the population of the island’s birds, whom the cats like to hunt.

skydive

10. Skydive Over the North Shore

Do you want a more active way to see the island from above, and go on the best adventure in Hawaii? Go skydiving over the North Shore of Oahu. You get to do a tandem dive with your instructor, who will be happy to take you out of the plane with a backflip if you want an extra ounce of adventure.

11. Cycle on the Big Island

Get your active on with a cycle trip down one of the volcanoes of the mainland. You can choose from several memorable downhill rides or combine trips to go uphill as well as down. Go down Kilauea Volcano to get a view of Volcanoes National Park with the wind in your hair.

horseback Riding

12. Go horseback Riding in Tropical Rainforests

There are certain parts of Hawaii’s islands that are still essentially inaccessible by road. Take a horseback ride through the rainforest to get to some of the most beautiful and well-maintained natural parts of the islands.

For a unique and eco-conscious experience, take a horseback riding journey in Oahu. Not only will you get the opportunity to discover the historic Gunstock Ranch on a guided horseback tour, but you can also leave your mark by planting your very own Legacy Tree.

13. Have a Shark Encounter

If you love feeling adrenaline, you will likely get quite the satisfying experience from a shark encounter. You can have a shark experience in their habitat about three miles into the sea north of O’ahu’s North Shore. It is an experience you won’t soon forget, and one of the best adventures in Hawaii.

Did you know that while Hawaii is an adventure-lovers paradise it is also incredibly romantic and one of the best places for a destination wedding in world?
