Day 1-2: Venice – The City of Canals

History of Venice

Venice, a city that seems to magically float atop a lagoon woven from over 100 tiny islands, is a living testament to human ingenuity and architectural brilliance. Buildings rise directly from the water, giving it the nickname “The Floating City,” a place unlike any other.

Once a powerful maritime republic, Venice held sway during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as a bustling trade city. Its prime location at the crossroads of Europe and the East created a rich and diverse society, drawing in merchants, artists, and scholars from all corners of the world.

The city’s architecture is a captivating mix of styles, showcasing the grandeur of Gothic and Byzantine influences. Architectural marvels like the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace still stand, testaments to Venice’s historical significance and artistic prowess. Their intricate details, ornate facades, and soaring domes whisper tales of the city’s wealth and its role as a center of artistic and cultural innovation.

But Venice is more than just beautiful buildings; it’s a city of canals, where gondolas and water taxis replace cars and buses.

Highlights:

  • Piazza San Marco: Lose yourself in the magic of Piazza San Marco, the bustling heart of Venice. Marvel at the intricate details of St. Mark’s Basilica, its shimmering mosaics and towering domes telling stories of centuries past. Step into the Doge’s Palace, a Gothic masterpiece where you can almost hear the whispers of Venetian rulers in its opulent chambers and halls.

  • Canals, Bridges, and Gondola Serenade: Hop aboard a gondola and glide through Venice’s enchanting canals, where every arched bridge frames a picture-perfect moment. The gondolier’s song will add to the romance as you see the city’s stunning architecture from a unique perspective, discovering hidden corners and picturesque waterways. Stroll across the iconic Rialto Bridge, its shops and lively atmosphere offering a glimpse into everyday Venetian life. Don’t miss the Bridge of Sighs, its legend adding a touch of mystery to your journey.

  • Island Escape to Murano and Burano: Escape the crowds and hop on a vaporetto to the colorful islands of Murano and Burano. In Murano, witness the art of glassblowing and maybe even bring home a unique souvenir. Burano’s vibrant houses and charming streets will capture your heart and your camera’s lens.

  • Local Tips: Wander beyond the tourist hotspots into quieter districts like Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for a more authentic Venetian experience. Ask a friendly local for recommendations on where they go with their friends for a cozy bacaro (wine bar) with delicious cicchetti (Venetian tapas) or a the best piazza for people-watching.

Day 3: The Brenta Riviera – Palladian Elegance

Tracing Aristocratic Roots

The Brenta Riviera is a scenic stretch of river linking Venice to Padua, where Venetian aristocrats built opulent villas during the Renaissance. Andrea Palladio, a renowned architect, designed many of these estates, blending classical styles with innovative techniques.

Must-Visit Villas

  • Villa Foscari (La Malcontenta): Nestled along the river, this villa is celebrated for its harmony with the surrounding landscape and Palladio’s architectural genius.

  • Villa Pisani: Known as the “Queen of the Brenta,” this grand estate now serves as a museum showcasing its history and art.

As you drive along the river, take time to enjoy the lush countryside and stop at charming riverside towns for coffee or gelato.

Day 4: Padua – The Cradle of Learning

Historical Significance

Padua is one of Italy’s oldest cities, with roots dating back to the 12th century BCE. Known for its university, which is among the world’s oldest, Padua played a pivotal role in the Renaissance, attracting scholars like Galileo Galilei.

Top Attractions

  • Scrovegni Chapel: This 14th-century chapel, adorned with Giotto’s frescoes, is considered a cornerstone of Renaissance art.

  • Palazzo della Ragione: Visit the medieval marketplace under this massive hall, which has been in operation for over eight centuries.

  • Botanical Garden: Established in 1545, it’s the world’s oldest academic botanical garden and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dining Tip: Indulge in Padua’s culinary specialties like bigoli pasta with duck sauce or zuppa inglese, a decadent layered dessert. For more dining tips, check out our previous blog on what to eat in Italy.

Day 5: Parco Giardino Sigurtà and Borghetto sul Mincio

Nature’s Masterpiece and Fairytale Charm

Start your day at Parco Giardino Sigurtà, one of Europe’s most beautiful gardens. Spanning over 150 acres, it features flowerbeds, ancient trees, and serene water features. Depending on the season, you might find cherry blossoms, tulips, or fiery autumn foliage.

In the afternoon, head to Borghetto sul Mincio, a picturesque village renowned for its stone houses, ancient watermills, and charming bridges. Try the local specialty, tortellini di Valeggio, and soak in the serene atmosphere of this riverside gem.

Day 6: Sirmione on Lake Garda

Historical Allure

Situated on a peninsula jutting into Lake Garda, Sirmione has a rich history dating back to Roman times. Its thermal baths were famous even in antiquity, and the town remains a haven for relaxation and exploration.

Key Experiences

  • Scaliger Castle: This 13th-century fortress guards the entrance to the old town and offers spectacular lake views.

  • Grottoes of Catullus: Explore the ruins of a sprawling Roman villa that once belonged to the poet Catullus.

  • Thermal Baths: Sirmione’s thermal waters are renowned for their healing properties. Book a spa session to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

Day 7: Lake Garda – Limone and Riva del Garda

Lakeside Delights

  • Limone sul Garda: Once an isolated fishing village, Limone is now famous for its citrus groves and picturesque streets. Don’t miss sampling the local limoncello.

  • Riva del Garda: A vibrant town where Italian and Austrian influences converge. Enjoy a stroll along its waterfront promenade or take a boat ride to admire the lake’s azure waters.

For a touch of adventure, consider hiking or biking along trails in the surrounding mountains, which offer breathtaking panoramic views.

Day 8: Verona – The City of Love

Romantic Legacy

A perfect ending to a self-driving Italian adventure is the quaint town of Verona. Famed as the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona is steeped in romance and history. The city dates back to Roman times and has retained much of its ancient and medieval architecture.

Don’t Miss

  • Arena di Verona: This Roman amphitheater is still used for operas and concerts. Even if you can’t attend a performance, it’s worth a visit.

  • Juliet’s Balcony: While its connection to Shakespeare’s heroine is tenuous, this spot draws romantics from around the world.

  • Castelvecchio: A 14th-century castle housing an art museum with works spanning the Gothic to the Renaissance periods.

End your trip with a climb to Castel San Pietro for a sweeping view of Verona’s rooftops, the Adige River, and the surrounding hills.

Tips for Driving in Italy

  1. Navigation: Download offline maps or rent a GPS. While Italian road signs are generally clear, having navigation helps with unexpected detours..
  2. ZTL Zones: Many historic centers have restricted traffic zones (Zona a Traffico Limitato). Research parking options outside these areas and explore on foot.
  3. Fuel Stops: Fill up at major stations, as some rural areas have limited options. Also, note that many stations close during midday hours for riposo (a siesta).
  4. Driving Style: Italian drivers are confident and fast but follow clear rules. Stay alert and embrace the experience.

Why This Adventure Stands Out

This eight-day self-driven Italian adventure combines Italy’s rich history, natural beauty, and timeless culture. From Venice’s waterways to Verona’s romantic streets, every stop tells a story that will stay with you long after you return home. Whether it’s marveling at Palladian villas, strolling through lakeside villages, or savoring local cuisine, this trip is a celebration of all that makes Italy magical. So pack your bags, rev up your engine, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

One could also consider making a pit stop in Piedmont, one of Italy’s hidden gem destinations.

Recently my husband and I, along with our dear friends, had the great pleasure and privilege of exploring a place we had long wished to visit. We took a week to rejuvenate and unwind in Ireland, breaking away from our daily routine, jobs, and caring for children.

On our trip, we quickly learned that the Irish are inherently charming, unpretentious, and very welcoming to tourists, despite past invasions, religious conflicts, and other significant losses.

The beautiful and mesmerizing landscape, friendly locals, and jubilant social scene of Ireland kept us enchanted and engaged as we explored different regions of this fairytale land. Due to its vast greenery, Ireland is often referred to as the Emerald Isle. Tales, folklore, and mythology led our journey and helped us understand the uniqueness of each kingdom. Wherever you are in Ireland, castles and tower houses are only a stone’s throw away, and a new adventure awaited us at every turn in the road.

Our Guide to a 9 to 10 Day Itinerary to Ireland

Our Guide to a 9 to 10 Day Itinerary to Ireland

Our itinerary involved exploring the most captivating scenery, from coastlines to open fields filled with grazing sheep, cows, and horses.

Emerald isle Ireland open fields filled with grazing sheep, cows, and horses

We enjoyed pubs and live music in neighborhood-like towns while locals convened with violins and drums, playing eclectic yet classic Irish tunes.  Abbeys, castles, and churches emerged around unforeseen curves in the road, causing tourists like us to detour and break away from our carefully planned itineraries suddenly.

Although we had been thoroughly prepared to embrace the classically rainy Irish weather, our trip consisted of warm sunny days and beautiful crisp mornings.  To our amusement and excitement, the locals declared that we were enjoying Ireland’s “best” weather since 1976.  We were thrilled and grateful to have long days to explore the many wonders we encountered.

Although Ireland is ideally visited from mid-May through September, the weather is typically rainy and chilly, even during peak season.  Tourists expecting sunshine and short sleeves might be disappointed to learn that summer on the Emerald Isle typically brings afternoon rains with temperatures lingering in the 50s and 60s. Plan on packing rain gear and layers and embrace the weather as part of the charm and identity of this country.

Although we had carefully planned our route to maximize our time, a week is not long enough to see and experience all we had hoped.  Preferably, plan for 9-10 days to explore several counties like Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry, Clare, and Galway.

Emerald Isle

Dublin

Dublin is a vibrant city on a river.  A walk along the enchanting Liffey River gives a sense of everyday life in this metropolis.  Tourists, politicians, and business professionals mingle with local crowds patronizing the more than 100 pubs which line the banks. On the Northside of Liffey, stroll the trendy street of O’Connell.  South of Liffey is Trinity College and the trendy (but old streets) of Temple Bar.  For beer enthusiasts who wish to tours the Guinness brewery or whiskey fans excited to experience the Jameson Distillery, keep in mind that you are not alone, and Dublin tours are best booked well in advance.

While walking in Dublin, explore the campus of Trinity College (including its extravagant library and plush gardens). Next, visit the grounds of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the adjacent Christ Church Cathedral. Next, go to Phoenix Park, arguably the most beautiful park in Dublin (not to mention one of the largest parks in Europe). Meander to the Hole in the Wall for a refreshment, maybe two.  If traveling with small children, you will also want to stop by the Dublin Zoo, conveniently located in Phoenix Park.

While it is tempting to choose the touristy Temple Bar area to quench your thirst and hunger, we recommend that you venture further out to experience a more authentic side of the bustling city. For modern Irish-European cuisine, try Winding Stair or Woolen Mills, sister restaurants located on the north side of the Liffey on Ormond Quay.  For fine dining, The Greenhouse, Shanahan’s, Stoop Your Head, and Mulberry Tree also comes highly recommended by our Irish friends.

Our preferred suppliers in Dublin include the Westin, Fitzwilliam Hotel, Merrion Hotel, and Westbury.  Book your stay at any of these properties with BTA and receive additional amenities such as complimentary breakfast daily, food & beverage credits, welcome amenities and upgrades, early check-in, and late check-out upon availability.

BOOK WITH VIP AMENITIES

Day Trip to Northern Ireland from Dublin

Day Trip to Northern Ireland from Dublin

Northern Ireland is a popular full-day trip from Dublin, with tours starting at 6:45 am and returning to Dublin around 8/8:30 pm.  Tours typically include the romantic Dark Hedges, spectacular Giant’s Causeway (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), scenic Ballintoy Harbour, mysterious Cushendun Caves, and the metropolitan city of Belfast. Many visitors to Belfast stop to honor and remember the many lives lost at the Titanic Memorial Garden.  Allow two to three nights in Dublin to incorporate an experience of Northern Ireland into your itinerary. Consider spending the night for a more relaxed and unhurried excursion or booking a day or multi-day tour of Northern Ireland.

Kilkenny

Undeniably we fell in love with Kilkenny. A beautiful and charming, quintessentially Irish town with a population of just over 26,500 and a reasonable drive from Dublin (less than 2 hours heading south), it is not to be missed! This town is also home to one of the finest castles in Ireland, also of the same name – Kilkenny Castle.

St. Canice’s Cathedral is equally impressive.  Plan on spending a full day in the downtown area. Travelers quickly lose sight of time walking along the cobblestone streets of Kilkenny, exploring art galleries and boutique shopping and the medieval ruins around town.

Kilkenny, not surprisingly of Ireland, offers a lively pub and food scene. For example, take Langton’s Restaurant and Bar voted Pub of the Year by various outlets so many times it no longer participates in competitions.  Left Bank is another hot spot with live music and different dining scenes within the same establishment, from casual to more upscale.

Kilkenny

Situated 20 minutes outside of Kilkenny is the charming Mount Juliet Estate.  This spectacular property is also home to a Jack Nicklaus golf course, which proudly hosted the 2002 and 2004 WGC-American Express Championship and the European Tour’s Irish Open on three occasions between 1993 and 1995.  Despite its worthy namesake on the golf circuit, this luxury retreat equipped with a spa, lavish gardens, archery, horses, and other recreational activities is “a hidden gem” to most foreign travelers.  When traveling from downtown Kilkenny provide yourself enough time before dark to make way to your hotel. It truly is a maze spanning from the main drags onto the single-lane roads to your fortress for the night.

Expect to meet local and other Irish travelers.  We met folks who reside within the vicinity of Kilkenny and other Irish visitors from Cork and Clare, enjoying a weekend holiday away.  Oblivious to the passage of time, we became obsessed with learning how to see this great country like the Irish.  Our new friends, Mary and Mike, both well-traveled winos and foodies (as well as hurling enthusiasts, the “national” sport of Ireland), kindly shared their wealth of knowledge and personal experiences. Let’s say we learned the “craic.” A common phrase used in Ireland to describe whether you have any news or gossip is “What’s the craic?”

If staying two nights in Kilkenny, consider a day trip to Waterford (about 30-minute drive south).

Cork

Cork

This 800-year old city (population approximately 195,000) is a city worth stopping to see on your trek from coast to coast.  Cork is probably best known internationally for its proximity to Blarney Castle, where visitors are invited to kiss the famed stone. In return, they are said to receive the gift of eloquence. Unfortunately, our time did not permit an overnight in Cork; however, this place should be on your itinerary for the culinary experience alone.

The Ring of Kerry

It’s said in Kerry that “There are only two kingdoms, the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Kerry.” Ring of Kerry is best traveled by car in a counterclockwise direction, but any traveler to this magical place should make it a goal to get lost here.  Hotel accommodations and bed & breakfast populate Kenmare, Killarney, and Dingle.  Kenmare is a village town with an intimate setting; whereas, Killarney or Dingle is a bit more touristy but still maintains their unique identities.

The Ring of Kerry

A must-do for the active hiker and Star Wars fan is a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Skellig Islands.  On the summit of this breathtaking rock is a well-preserved sixth-century monastic settlement, standing 714ft above sea level.  The landing tour to Skellig Islands sells out months in advance, with only a limited number of boats allowed daily onto the island.

Stay in Killarney or a surrounding area for a minimum of two to three nights, and arrive at least a day before you tour Skellig Islands.  Plan on enjoying time at Killarney National Park, visiting the lively downtown, and, if time permits, take a day trip to Dingle (which is further northwest along the coast).

Clare

UNESCO Global Geoparks, Cliffs of Moher, and Burren are must-sees during your time in Clare.  Expect murky weather, but in our opinion, the fogginess along the hike up the cliffs only adds to the mystery of this magnificent site.  Our accommodations in Clare provided us the royal treatment and exceptional amenities.  We stayed at the recently renovated Dromoland Castle, which has been welcoming guests since the 16th century.

Clare

Although not in Clare County, another great castle to experience royal accommodations in Ireland is the Adare Manor Hotel, located just about an hour further south.

BOOK WITH VIP AMENITIES

Galway

Our next trip to Ireland will undoubtedly include visiting Ireland’s bustling 5th largest city, Galway.  This city is popularly known as the “City of the Tribes” in honor of its founders – 14 families from distinctly different backgrounds.  Galway continues to be a place of celebration of individuality and diversity.  Venture about 45 minutes further north from Galway to experience a captive stay at Ashford Castle’s 13th-century building.

Transportation

Many tourists prefer a self-driving itinerary through Ireland.  While driving in Ireland is a little intimidating, traveling on these narrow, winding roads is part of the excitement.  Before you leave your trip, be sure to seek guidance on rental car insurance.  Major landmarks and directions to cities are well marked. However, the traffic and conditions of the roads, not to mention driving on the other side of the road, can be challenging for some tourists.

Pathway in a green forest

Consider your driving comfort level, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.  Many travelers opt for customized itineraries that include private drivers or pre-arranged tours. BTA can arrange an itinerary based on your specific needs directly with our preferred suppliers based in Ireland.

Travel by air is also possible.  Itineraries flying in and out of different cities, including Dublin, Cork, and Shannon, and returning to the United States are viable options.

Ireland’s History

A land of contradictions and invasions, Ireland has experienced rises and falls over centuries. Celtics led the earliest raids from Europe around 300 BC.  The continuation of invasions further marked territories and shaped the people.

The rise of Christianity greatly influenced by St. Patrick began 600 years later, and in 700 AD, Viking and North invaders began to settle on the island. But, as with most of Europe, peace was fleeting and unpredictable. England’s long involvement with Ireland began following an intervention between two Irish kings in dispute.  At the top of Ireland’s worst sufferings was the Great Famine of the 1840s and 1850s.  The horrifying potato famine killed a million people and forced another million to emigrate from the country.  Many believed that the English should have done more to aid the starving people.  This common belief propelled the resistance against English rule.  A long and bloody struggle for independence was fought until 1922, when a free state was born.  The free state was named Ireland in 1937 and officially declared a republic in 1948.  Ireland consists of twenty-six counties, and separately there are six other counties, known as Northern Ireland, which remain part of the United Kingdom.

During the 70s and 80s, Ireland’s economy was amid decline, and emigration was again on the high.  However, the 90s was a time of unprecedented economic growth until the global crisis of 2008.  Today, Ireland’s economy is on the rise. Immigration is in flux, and tourism is booming, giving BTA every reason to make Ireland one of our destinations for Summer 2019.

1. Peninsula Paris

Peninsula Paris - Historic Hotels

Situated right in the heart of the City of Light, today Peninsula Paris is an oasis unlike any other. Located on 19th Avenue Kléber, the hotel’s history dates back to 1864. At that time, Russian ruler Count Basilewsky built a castle on this site, inspired by his beloved Palace of Versailles. After selling the palace it became the home of the deposed Queen Isabella II of Spain, who spent many years plotting and conspiring at this address.

Following her death, a bidding war ensued between hotel magnate Leonard Tauber, the US Government, and the King of Belgium. Tauber won and constructed the luxurious Hotel Majestic on the site. For sentimental purposes, he kept Queen Isabella’s marble bath and placed it in the Presidential Suite.

During the subsequent decades, the hotel served as a hospital, the host of the “soiree of the century” attended by James Joyce, Pablo Picasso, and Igor Stravinsky, the home of George Gershwin, the headquarters of Nazi High Command during WWII, and headquarters of UNESCO. After years of turmoil and upheaval, the property was restored to its glorious past following 3 years and a $575 million investment by Peninsula Hotels.

Today, the Peninsula is one of the best luxury hotels in Europe. Surrounded by chic Parisian architecture and design, Peninsula Paris is the perfect location for a getaway.

The South of France is a getaway on most people’s list of travel plans, and San Tropez is a mecca for luxury travelers, celebrities, and honeymooners. Hugging the Mediterranean Sea, Chateau de la Messardiere is a 5-star hotel designed for pampering and relaxation. But the hotel is not simply glitz and glamour.

The history of this hotel is as fascinating as the region it inhabits. The name Messardière dates back to the reign of Charles Martel, the grandfather of none other than the iconic ruler, Charlemagne. The chateau was built in 1904 and given as a wedding gift to a young officer, Henry Brisson de la Messardière, and his beautiful artist wife, Louise Dupuy Angeac.

Sadly, following Henry’s death, financial woes led Louise to sell her beautiful home. Unfortunately, subsequent owners dismissed the hotel’s importance, leaving it to crumble and decay. Fortunately, a French Industrialist purchased the property in 1998 and restored its former glory.

Now, this luxury hotel is considered not only one of the best hotels in France but also one of the best places to travel in europe. It offers a perfect getaway for groups, families, and couples.

10. Chateau La Cheneviere, Port-en-Bessin Normandy

Hotel Chateau La Cheneriere

Images courtesy of Chateau La Cheneriere

Although the Chateau La Cheneviere is a massive estate, it feels more like a cozy tucked-away country home than a grand palace. While today the chateau is one of France’s most beautiful luxury hotels, it has a long history and deep ties to the community. The gracious gardens surrounding the estate served an essential purpose in the 17th century. They were used for hemp cultivation to make rope and clothing for local fishermen.

During the Second World War, the Germans occupied the property, housing both Third Reich soldiers and officers. But in 1944, Armand Lapierre, a member of the French Resistance, participated in the “Grande Coupure” on the chateau’s property. The event aimed to decimate German communication lines around La Cheneviere. After D-Day, the Royal Army took over the property and utilized it as a strategic center to fight against the Nazis.

Eventually, Marie Francoise and Thomas Dicker purchased the chateau. They converted it into one of the most prestigious historic hotels in Europe, paying homage to its storied past. Today, guests can enjoy the many amenities provided by the hotel, including a heated outdoor pool, apiary, tennis courts, and lovely grounds.

First, sip a French 44 or local vintage at the bar while the bartender regales you with stories of bygone days. Then, enjoy exquisite gastronomic cuisine with ingredients procured from the home’s vegetable gardens.

What is Croatia known for ?

10. Game Of Throne:

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones

For those of us who spent years arduously following the convoluted plotlines, dragon tales, white walker attacks, unexpected births, deaths, and marriages of one of the most popular TV shows ever created, Croatia is a fan mecca. But, of course, the Game of Thrones world wasn’t made in a movie studio.

King’s Landing, the setting of much of the show’s plotline, is almost entirely filmed in the genuine UNESCO World Heritage city of Dubrovnik.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that it has drawn thousands of anxious fans to its borders since the show’s inception. But can you pick out the scenes featuring the city walls? First, go early in the morning on a guided experience to beat the heat and crowds. Then, you can climb the stone steps for a small fee and walk the entire city’s circumference, which offers a spectacular view of the historic rooftops and the Adriatic Sea glistening in the background. You may even spot Tyrion broodingly contemplating his allegiances in the distance.

For those of you looking to connect with the character’s plights a bit more closely, follow the path of Cersei’s atonement walk along the Jesuit Stairs located off of St. Dominika Street. After purchasing your very own “Shame Bell,” you can head out to the Tresteno Arboretum and walk the gardens of the Red Keep. Can you name the alliances forged and broken amidst the flowering trees and romantic paths?

After you have thoroughly explored the central filming locations, head out to find the holy grail of the show, you guessed it, the Iron throne! Located on the island of Lokrum, the most important symbol of the show can be seen in a small museum, a short 15-minute ferry ride from the Old City’s main port.

9. Historical Sights:

Diocletian's Palace

Both the Ancient Greeks and Romans settled Croatia and subsequently defended against Venetians and Ottomans. From the Istrian Peninsula to Dalmatia, visitors will find over 2,000 years of the tumultuous and often brutal history.

The most easily accessible and famous sight is Diocletian’s Palace, located in Split and built around 300 ACE. Walk through historical ruins in the main square of Peristil and find yourself transported back in time. Pass relics that were brought in throughout the centuries and preserved in various stages as the city grew and evolved. Some exciting sights include an ancient Egyptian sphinx from Luxor, the Temple of Jupiter, and Diocletian’s mausoleum, which was later transformed into the Split Cathedral. However, perhaps the most fascinating thing is that Diocletian’s Palace is still home to a community of residents who own shops, hotels, and restaurants within the palace walls.

Take a private Split history and foodie tour or a highlights tour to experience the city through the eyes of a historian.

If you skipped over the Game of Thrones facts, you might have missed the part about Dubrovnik’s City Walls. These beautifully preserved and incredibly symbolic architectural masterpieces were built in the mid-1300s after liberation from the Venetians as a necessity for protection from further attacks. They were created to withstand time but also represent wealth and beauty. While most people choose to spend a few nights in Dubrovnik, doing a day trip visit from Split is also possible with a great guided itinerary.

Some other incredible sights include the well-preserved Roman-era Pula Amphitheater, the 13th century Trogir Cathedral and the walls of Ston.

8. Zagreb:

Zagreb

Although the city doesn’t make most people’s radar aside from a place to fly in and out of, it’s worthy of a couple of days of your time. This large yet quaint and safe city offers unlimited possibilities for music and theatre events, art exhibitions, museums, dining, and quintessential European strolling in the spacious pedestrian zones and over 30 parks. A perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside and getting off the beaten path. Zagreb certainly qualifies as one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia.

7. National Parks:

Krka National Park

While it’s true that most visitors come to Croatia for the infamous beaches and islands, in the know travelers recognized that Croatia is known for offering s a cornucopia of outdoor adventures with stunning mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and wild forests.

The countries’ eight national parks are hugely popular with European travelers in Summer but largely quiet the rest of the year.

Visit during the spring to see wildflowers blanketing the hillsides. Come in autumn for gorgeous foliage. Or venture out to explore snow-covered trees and the magical silence of winter.

Kornati Islands Natioanl Park

One of the most interesting Parks is the Kornati Islands, located just off the coast between Zadar and Sibenik and are 140 separate islands. Although off the radar for most tourists, they are pretty famous in the yachting world for being one of the best sailing destinations in Europe with calm waters and relaxing winds. Sail from Zadar or take a speedboat tour.

Krka National Park

If swimming through waterfalls is your idea of a perfect day, then a visit to Krka National Park, whose claim to fame is the multi-tiered wedding cake waterfall of Skradinski Buk, is a must. Spend the first part of the trip taking the trail uphill, which heads to the top of the waterfall for gorgeous photo-ops, then through the upper sections where wooden platforms have been set up to allow walking over the rivers. Finally, end your day trip with a swim under the waterfalls in the beautiful crystal clear water. Visit Krka on a relaxing day trip from Zadar.

Mljet National Park

Dubrovnik to Mljet National Park offers another fantastic day tip option. Located in the northwestern section of Mljet Island, the park includes two salt lakes, with the larger Veliko Jezero showcasing a Benedictine monastery. Spend a quiet day kayaking, cycling, hiking, and swimming. As motor vehicles are forbidden anywhere in the national park, it retains its sense of solitude and romance even in peak season. Take a boating day trip from Dubrovnik and experience it firsthand.

6. Plitvice Lakes National Park:

Plitvice Lakes

Yes, we recognize that this is another National Park. However, Plitvice Lakes deserves its section. This mountain wonderland is a spectacular feat of nature, showcasing 16 interconnected lakes linked by rivers and waterfalls. The best way to see this area is overnight but many travelers make do with a long but worthwhile day trip from Split

High in minerals, the lakes are constantly changing colors, appearing emerald green one moment, cobalt, aquamarine, or cerulean the next depending on how the light hits them.

Spend a few hours walking on wooden pathways over the crystal water while being surrounded by waterfalls and extensive wild forests. There are two main trails in the park. Trail A circles the two lower lakes, descending from the cliff tops down and crossing one of the lakes on a wooden platform before climbing up again. Trail B follows the same path but also reaches Kozjak lake, the largest lake in Plitvice. A boat will take you across the lake for a short scenic ride, and a small train will take you back towards entrance 1 to complete the visit.

Note: Trail K, which is over 18 km long, can take you to the top of the northernmost upper lake. This is a spectacular hike that takes around 8 hours to complete. Plan to spend the night in the area if you are hiking Trail K. Check the official Plitvice site for more information.

Although definitely “out of the way” from most main tourist hubs, a visit to Croatia would be incomplete without visiting a world wonder. Spend a night or take a day trip from Zagreb or Split. The trails are extremely well marked and easily navigated, and this park is ideal for strolling at leisure. Plitvice Lakes is absolutely one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia.

The Food:

Croatian cuisine

Traditional Croatian cuisine is wide and varied, yet thoroughly infused with Mediterranean flavors influenced by neighboring countries and nations which have ruled the territories over the centuries.

Epicureans will note similarities with Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, and even Turkish cuisine. Yet, Croatian dishes have their own unique and distinct flavors, which vary from region to region.

Along the Dalmatian coast and islands, the cuisine is based heavily on the Mediterranean diet, heavy in fish, salads, and olive oil. However, if you venture closer to Zagreb, the flavors change to central European countries with meat, potatoes, and cabbage. The Istrian peninsula has more exciting and varied dishes like manestra, a bean soup prepared only in Istria, or fuzi, a hand-rolled pasta.

Traditional dishes which will tantalize your taste buds:

Crni rizot: Found in nearly every seafood restaurant in Croatia, this black squid risotto typically contains mussels, clams, and other shellfish. This is a must-try!

Pasticada: Baby beef fillet, marinated in wine vinegar for several days before being braised for hours, first in its juice, and later with red wine, this prevalent Dalmatian dish is served with homemade gnocchi.

Skampi na buzaru: A traditional seafood scampi with muscles, shrimp, or clams.

Strukli: Somewhat similar to a pirogi this is a pastry filled with cottage cheese and sour cream. Served mainly in the region around Zagreb.

Punjene paprike: More common in Turkish cuisine the Croatian variation of stuffed peppers includes minced meat, rice, and spices, cooked with tomato sauce.

Fritule: Another favorite dessert these dough balls are made with flour, raisins, lemon zest, and schnapps, and of course, deep-fried

Arancini: These are traditional Croatian desserts made of candied orange peels.

Krostule: This delicious deep-fried dough is sprinkled with powder sugar and melts in your mouth.

4. Scuba Diving:

Croatia scuba diving

Blessed with an entire coastline of crystal clear Adriatic water, it should come as no surprise that Croatia offers divers a plethora of diving opportunities. In addition, around 1000 islands found off the coast in Croatia are adorned with canyons, reefs, underwater caverns, and chilling shipwrecks. So spend a day, a week, or a lifetime island hopping in search of your hidden corner of underwater paradise.

Dives around the island of Vis offer WWI and WWII shipwrecks fallen in battle as well as a B-17 bomber. The gulf of Kvarner to the North is known for amazing wall dives and rocky reefs covered with beautiful gorgonians. If you are interested in exploring the Blue Cave, head to Bisevo. The cave is accessible only via small boats.

3. Dubrovnik:

Dubrovnik

We simply can’t get enough of the city dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” If historical sites and filming locations did not entice you, the city offers various cultural activities and festivals. Stroll the picturesque streets and alleyways, admire the splendid cathedral and treasury, grab a bite to eat, and visit art galleries featuring both modern and traditional works of art.

Start your day early, climb the steps to the city walls, and head over to the infamous, pedestrian-only Pile Gate, which served as the main entry point to the old city. Built in 1537 and formerly surrounded by a moat and complete with a drawbridge, it is as scenic as historic.

Afterward, take a stroll over to the once Grandiose fountain of Onofrio. (Somewhat smaller today than the original due to damage in the earthquake of 1667). After lunch, make sure to visit the beautiful Dubrovnik Cathedral-also referred to as the Assumption Cathedral. The highlights here are paintings by Italian and Dalmatian artists from the 16th to 18th centuries.

One of the most prominent pieces in the Assumption Cathedral is the beautiful painting of the assumption of Mary, done by Titian around 1552. Other relics include a portion of Jesus’ crucifixion cross and the head, leg, and arm of St. Blaise from the 13th century.

After a day of touring, head to the spectacular Stradun, one of Europe’s most picturesque pedestrian thoroughfares. It is lined with cafés and restaurants, so pick a spot to rest and people watch over an espresso. Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and one of the top sights in Croatia.

2. Croatia’s Islands:

Ok, so there is a reason that most tourists understand that Croatia is known for the stunning coastline, clear waters, and plethora of islands. However, the most challenging task is choosing which of the 1000 islands to see and which ones to skip over. Although primarily based on personal preferences, these are the top 5 islands that would appease even the most discerning islands hopper. Each of these islands qualifies as one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia, but you will have difficulty choosing just one.

If you only have a day explore the Croatian coast by private boat from Split to get a taste of this magical region.

Hvar:

Hvar

A truly sophisticated place to see and be seen. This glamorous jewel is akin to St. Tropez, full of beautiful shops, streets, and people. While known as a celebrity and party-goer hot spot, it is also full of hidden coves, romantic vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields, and an incredibly preserved Španjola fortress. Hvar is undoubtedly one of the top sights in Croatia.

Consider taking a cruise that includes a stopover at Hvar to experience the region and get a taste of the different islands.

Brac:

Most people visit Brac to spend time on its famous beach ‘Zlatni Rat.’ However, there is so much more to see and do. Take a 50-minute ferry journey from Split, and discover this low-key happy place. From beaches emerging like secret gifts from the pine forests to secluded bays and up to Vidova Gora, the highest peak in the Croatian islands, you can spend weeks exploring and relaxing. In addition, there are several towns complete with romantic squares, fountains, cobblestone streets, phenomenal restaurants, and fun bars.

Elaphiti Islands:

These quiet and relaxing islands are well connected to Dubrovnik by ferries and can be reached in 30- 50 minutes. They make an ideal escape from the hustle of Dubrovnik and can be visited on day trips or for a weekend getaway. Make sure to visit Sipan Island, which boasts its own (rare) sandy beach, and spend a day strolling the wonderfully traffic-free Lopud.

Korcula:

This historical island claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. It is reminiscent of a mini-Dubrovnik with a beautiful old town and outstanding gothic and romantic architecture examples. Spend your days exploring the various beaches, kayaking along the shores, snorkeling in the clear warm water, or wine tasting with local sommeliers. Tip; Korcula is well known for its very own crisp white wine.

Mljet:

We have already covered Mljet in the national park section. This island is a favorite with nature lovers, hikers, and visitors searching for quiet seclusion. Most visitors come for day trips. Therefore evenings are usually crowd-free, even in the peak season. Best experienced by multi-day sailing trips.

Interesting Fact: This is where Odysseus spent seven years frolicking with his nymph Calypso.

1. The People:

A top 10 list for this country would not be complete without a nod to the people that have made it one of our favorite countries in Europe. Beautiful inside and out, Croatian’s are known for their warmth, hospitality, and friendliness. Whether spending a week island hopping, traveling with friends, family, or even on a solo journey, you will find that you leave with so much more love, appreciation, and friendships than you came with or could have ever hoped for.

Croatia is one of the most incredible destinations in Europe. While there is plenty to see and do, many visitors choose to combine their trip with a visit to other countries. If you want to explore the region in more depth, we recommend visiting Italy, Greece, or France.

From Tower Bridge to the London Eye, London has some of the most iconic and well-recognized attractions in the world. Millions of people visit the capital of the United Kingdom every year eager to explore English history, visit the city’s famous museums, and have fun exploring the family-friendly attractions and sights!

While planning your itinerary might seem easy with many places worth exploring, choosing the best accommodation can be challenging, especially when traveling with your children

Sifting through thousands of online reviews and posts is time-consuming and doesn’t guarantee that what works for one family will work for you. For example, many hotels in Europe offer double-occupancy rooms that are not suitable for families with young children requiring families to secure multiple rooms to accommodate their needs. In addition, some hotels guarantee connecting rooms (many do not), making it easy to prop open the connecting door and enjoy privacy and convenience.

Other hotels offer family-friendly suites complete with a separate living area and kitchenette. Families with younger children will want to carefully consider the location of their hotel to ensure easy access to attractions and the Underground. If you want to avoid the costly mistakes of securing the wrong accommodation for your next trip to London, here is our list of the 10 best hotels in London for families! We are sure you will find precisely what you need below, so keep reading.
