1. Peninsula Paris

Peninsula Paris - Historic Hotels

Situated right in the heart of the City of Light, today Peninsula Paris is an oasis unlike any other. Located on 19th Avenue Kléber, the hotel’s history dates back to 1864. At that time, Russian ruler Count Basilewsky built a castle on this site, inspired by his beloved Palace of Versailles. After selling the palace it became the home of the deposed Queen Isabella II of Spain, who spent many years plotting and conspiring at this address.

Following her death, a bidding war ensued between hotel magnate Leonard Tauber, the US Government, and the King of Belgium. Tauber won and constructed the luxurious Hotel Majestic on the site. For sentimental purposes, he kept Queen Isabella’s marble bath and placed it in the Presidential Suite.

During the subsequent decades, the hotel served as a hospital, the host of the “soiree of the century” attended by James Joyce, Pablo Picasso, and Igor Stravinsky, the home of George Gershwin, the headquarters of Nazi High Command during WWII, and headquarters of UNESCO. After years of turmoil and upheaval, the property was restored to its glorious past following 3 years and a $575 million investment by Peninsula Hotels.

Today, the Peninsula is one of the best luxury hotels in Europe. Surrounded by chic Parisian architecture and design, Peninsula Paris is the perfect location for a getaway.

Hugging the Mediterranean Sea, Chateau de la Messardiere is a 5-star hotel designed for pampering and relaxation. But the hotel is not simply glitz and glamour.

The history of this hotel is as fascinating as the region it inhabits. The name Messardière dates back to the reign of Charles Martel, the grandfather of none other than the iconic ruler, Charlemagne. The chateau was built in 1904 and given as a wedding gift to a young officer, Henry Brisson de la Messardière, and his beautiful artist wife, Louise Dupuy Angeac.

Sadly, following Henry’s death, financial woes led Louise to sell her beautiful home. Unfortunately, subsequent owners dismissed the hotel’s importance, leaving it to crumble and decay. Fortunately, a French Industrialist purchased the property in 1998 and restored its former glory.

Now, this luxury hotel is considered not only one of the best hotels in France but also one of the best places to travel in europe. It offers a perfect getaway for groups, families, and couples.

10. Chateau La Cheneviere, Port-en-Bessin Normandy

Hotel Chateau La Cheneriere

Although the Chateau La Cheneviere is a massive estate, it feels more like a cozy tucked-away country home than a grand palace. While today the chateau is one of France’s most beautiful luxury hotels, it has a long history and deep ties to the community. The gracious gardens surrounding the estate served an essential purpose in the 17th century. They were used for hemp cultivation to make rope and clothing for local fishermen.

During the Second World War, the Germans occupied the property, housing both Third Reich soldiers and officers. But in 1944, Armand Lapierre, a member of the French Resistance, participated in the “Grande Coupure” on the chateau’s property. The event aimed to decimate German communication lines around La Cheneviere. After D-Day, the Royal Army took over the property and utilized it as a strategic center to fight against the Nazis.

Eventually, Marie Francoise and Thomas Dicker purchased the chateau. They converted it into one of the most prestigious historic hotels in Europe, paying homage to its storied past. Today, guests can enjoy the many amenities provided by the hotel, including a heated outdoor pool, apiary, tennis courts, and lovely grounds.

First, sip a French 44 or local vintage at the bar while the bartender regales you with stories of bygone days. Then, enjoy exquisite gastronomic cuisine with ingredients procured from the home’s vegetable gardens.

On our recent European adventure, we discovered the authentic side of Portugal in the Algarve and magical Alentejo. When I started planning my trip to Portugal, I received more mixed information and varying opinions than any trip in my recent memory. From some, I heard that Portugal was incredible, unspoiled, and beautiful with all the best features of Europe without the massive crowds, tour groups, or exorbitant prices.

I listened to stories about the outstanding food with delicious fresh fish, enormous lobsters, seafood stews, homemade desserts, and crisp wines. Friends raved about the stunning scenery, clean beaches, well-preserved medieval towns, and beautiful cities.

I got feedback from others that the country was crowded, overdeveloped, and nearly devoid of charm and authenticity. I heard that it was hard to find a spot on the beach, almost impossible to get truly local food and that the hotels, condos, and apartment buildings had overtaken the once stunning coastlines. I was not yet sure how to plan my own version of this Portugal 10 Day Family Vacation, but I was determined to find out how one relatively small country could conjure such mixed emotions and opinions. When we arrived in the airport of Faro and headed to the rental car agency, the man who checked us out was surprised that we could drive a manual vehicle, would be venturing out past the tourist meccas of Algarve, and that we aimed to see and experience an authentic, off-the-beaten-path side to his country.

Why Not Lagos

When we mistakenly arrived in Lagos because our navigation could not register the address of our hotel, I immediately understood where the negative comments arose from. The city was large, overbuilt, and crowded. While the marina held some lovely stores and the historic streets were clean and organized, there was no indication that we were actually in Portugal.

For all the construction, apartment buildings, and fish and chip shops, we could just as quickly have landed in any of the other sadly overdeveloped coasts of Europe. Everyone spoke English. Few spoke native Portuguese. It was a cliché and disappointment, but I was determined to look deeper.

To find our hotel location, we had to take down handwritten directions from the receptionist who spoke moderate English and told us that navigation could not register the address as it did not actually exist (yet). We would have to drive along the coast. When we were approximately halfway past the signs for the beach of Luz, turn off and look for a billboard with directions toward Dona Maria and an unmarked yellow building containing the reception. Disorganized and slightly maddening? Sure, but this was a far better alternative for us than the town from which we had just come.

It took us many wrong turns and some interpretative requests for directions from older Portuguese passersby’s who spoke no English to locate the correct “yellow building” without a sign amongst a sea of other yellow buildings on a beaten-down road. For more inspiration check out our article on How to Plan the Perfect Adventure Based Itinerary to Portugal.

Burgau, Portugal

Magical Villages

The hotel we had chosen was a bit of a disappointment, the result of last-minute changes to our itinerary when I decided to add the Algarve region to our Portugal adventure. The rooms were run down and did not live up to their 4* claims (something that frequently happens in Europe, stars are a relative designation open to interpretation), but it had a glorious view and a perfect location. If you are looking for an authentic Portugal experience in Algarve, our recommendation is to stay in Carvoeiro or one of the other nearby towns.

The development was lovely and clean, with some spectacular homes clinging to the hills and overlooking the ocean. But the best part was the hiking path in front of our room that ran along the ocean’s cliffs, connecting two tiny and perfectly authentic villages. Turn left, and a ten-minute walk brought us to a spectacular little town of Luz with a glorious beach, delicious seafood restaurants, tiny cafes, and a few gelato shops. Turn right, and another 15-minute walk brought us straight down the side of a cliff into the tiny village of Burgau. This is precisely the authentic side of Portugal’s Algarve and magical Alentejo we were looking for.

Benagil Caves, Portugal

Benagil Caves, Portugal

This was the Portugal I had imagined.  Intimate cobbled streets, pastel-painted houses, clothes hanging on lines outside the windows, and locals playing with their children in the waves. Undoubtedly, there were tourists, but for a day in mid-July, we could have our pick of spots on the beach, never waited more than 10 minutes for a table, and had some of the most incredible and inexpensive seafood of our lives.

We spent our time exploring the villages by our hotel and the stunning beach towns of Carvoeiro and Salema, where we had the best meal of our entire trip at Agua Na Boca, a quaint restaurant where the owner was our waiter. We ventured into Sagres in search of surf-worthy waves but finding instead the remains on an ancient fortress and nearly abandoned beach. We took a precarious boat ride to explore the famous Caves of Benagil and swam in the chilly waters of the wild Atlantic Ocean. Choosing to enter Lagos only for the necessity of catching our boat ride, we clung to the yet unspoiled villages and tiny coved beaches.

Authentic Alentejo

While the Algarve gets most of the attention, beyond its better known resort towns lies a landscape that remains refreshingly undeveloped. Just north, Alentejo moves at a slower pace. It is a region shaped by culinary traditions, vineyards, ancient settlements, and long stretches of coastline that feel largely untouched. Development here has been deliberate, slow and in many places, barely perceptible, which is precisely its appeal.

On our drive toward Cascais, we explored only a small portion of Alentejo, enough to understand how much more there is to see. The experience left me feeling that I had only barely scratched the surface and could not wait to return for more. This is a part of Portugal that invites time, patience, and repeat visits, not a checklist approach. I am already planning a future stay at L’AND Vineyards Relais & Châteaux for an ideal base to explore much more of this region. Set among vineyards and open plains, this eco hotel represents the kind of thoughtful hospitality that aligns naturally with Alentejo’s character.

This area, mostly known for wineries and vineyards, is also home to some of Portugal’s most stunning beaches and coastlines, yet few visitors are lucky enough to see them. There are also remarkable traces of long-lost civilizations, Roman ruins, Arab forts, and the simple churches of early Christianity. Sadly, we did not have the time to explore the Rota dos Castelos (Castle Route), which connects the lovely medieval villages of Nisa, Castelo de Vide, Marvão, Portalegre, and Alter do Chão, but we did visit the beaches.

Straddling the Northern border between Algarve and Alentejo, in the natural park of the Costa Vicentina lies one of the beautiful beaches in the world, Odeceixe. We spent a day here, but one could easily spend a summer and maybe even a lifetime. Bridging the gaps between past and present, tradition and progress, the town of Odeceixe clings to its roots as steadily as the homes clinging to the cliffs.

Salema, Portugal

From there, we ventured on to one of the most charming towns in Europe in Zambujeira do Mar, where most of the menus were in Portuguese, and our waiter had to grab a friend so we could place our order, not entirely sure what we would be getting. Locals and tourists were co-existing everywhere we went in a blissful display of holiday relaxation and authentic happiness.

Our children played in the ocean and got yelled at by lifeguards who they could not understand but could gather that they had ventured too far into the unpredictable sea. They made friends with children who were curious to hear my children speaking a language usually reserved for television cartoons.

Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

We went off the beaten path, never feeling unsafe, unwelcome, or disappointed. Instead, finding charm, culture, history, and challenges brought us closer as a family and as people in this big world. This was Portugal  – the way we imagined and one who will have us coming back to over and over again. Discovering the authentic side of Portugal’s Algarve and magical Alentejo gave a true sense of the beauty and charm of this country.

Of course, it would have been simpler to book the trendy hotels found in Lagos, or Faro, which many travelers are happy to call home.  However, for our family, avoiding the chaos and frustration of getting lost along unmarked roads would have meant missing out on the beauty of a country hidden just around the corner and the charming locals anxiously awaiting to share their culture, cuisine, and boundless hospitality.

Where to stay in Algarve and Alentejo

From Ballparks to Fairways of Discovery

For many American families, baseball has long been a shared experience—whether it’s watching your favorite team at a big-league stadium, spending weekends at the ballpark cheering on your child, or collecting ticket stubs from memorable games. Those traditions remain a meaningful part of family life and travel. But as we get older, the way we participate in sports often changes. Instead of playing catch or rounding bases, many of us turn to golf—a game that can be enjoyed for a lifetime and easily woven into our travels. The quest expands from stadiums to fairways, with golfers setting their sights on iconic courses across the country, each carrying its own legends, landscapes, and lore.

Golf vacations, however, are about more than just the game. The true appeal lies in the experiences that surround it—traveling with friends or couples, even when not everyone plays, bringing your clubs on a family trip while kids are busy with their own adventures, or pairing a round with fine dining, wellness, and cultural exploration. A day on a championship course becomes part of a broader journey that blends luxury hotels, spa retreats, outdoor adventure, and memorable moments both on and off the fairway.

If you’re inspired to plan your own golf getaway, many of the hotels featured here can be booked directly through our Luxury Travel Club, with our team working behind the scenes to ensure your stay feels VIP from start to finish. Or, if you prefer, you can work with a trusted travel advisor who will curate an exceptional itinerary tailored to your style of travel.

1. Pebble Beach & Monterey Peninsula, California

The Golf: Pebble Beach Golf Links is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier golf destinations, consistently ranked among the Top 25 Golf Courses in the World by Travel + Leisure. Its cliffside holes overlooking the Pacific are iconic—from the postcard-perfect par-3 seventh to the dramatic par-5 eighteenth along Stillwater Cove, where champions have been crowned and history has been written. Add in Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay, and the Monterey Peninsula becomes one of the most complete golf experiences in America.

Beyond the Greens: The area offers just as much away from the course. Carmel-by-the-Sea enchants visitors with cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and art galleries. The famous 17-Mile Drive winds along dramatic coastal bluffs, while Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Big Sur showcase some of California’s most breathtaking scenery. Families can explore the Monterey Bay Aquarium, consistently rated among the best in the world, or spend the day cycling, kayaking, and exploring the coast.

Wine Country: Just inland, Carmel Valley has become one of California’s top wine regions, particularly known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Wineries such as Bernardus Winery, Folktale Winery, and Talbott Vineyards are celebrated for their award-winning vintages, offering tastings set against rolling hills and golden light. An afternoon in the vineyards is the perfect complement to a morning on the fairways.

Where to Stay:

  • The Lodge at Pebble Beach – A Forbes Five-Star resort perched on the 18th fairway, with ocean-view rooms, fine dining at Stillwater Bar & Grill, and treatments at the Forbes Five-Star Spa at Pebble Beach.

  • Casa Palmero – An intimate Mediterranean-style retreat with 24 rooms, private courtyards, and butler service. Guests enjoy seclusion while remaining steps away from the resort’s world-class amenities.
  • InterContinental The Clement Monterey – A contemporary oceanfront hotel on Cannery Row, featuring spa services, chic accommodations, and sweeping views of Monterey Bay.
  • Post Ranch Inn – If you are willing to venture a little further or extend your era following golf, this unique property nestled in Big Sur offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and Pacific Ocean. Post Ranch Inn embodies luxury with its sustainable design, infinity pools, and luxurious spa. While not directly in the Pebble Beach area, it provides an unforgettable retreat just an hour’s drive away, allowing you to enjoy both the tranquility of Big Sur and easy access to the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links.

2. Scottsdale, Arizona

The Golf: Scottsdale is not just a golf destination—it’s home for us at Boutique Travel Advisors, and we take great pride in living in what Travel + Leisure recently named the Best Golf City in the United States. With more than 200 courses framed by desert mountains and saguaro cacti, Scottsdale offers year-round play and some of the country’s most striking desert golf.

Troon North, with its Monument and Pinnacle courses, is often considered the benchmark for desert golf, where fairways wind through towering granite boulders and pristine Sonoran landscapes. TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course, famous for its rowdy 16th hole, hosts the WM Phoenix Open—an event dubbed “the Greatest Show on Grass.” More than just a PGA Tour stop, the tournament is a community celebration organized by The Thunderbirds, who also support youth development programs like the First Tee. For golfers planning a trip in February, it’s an experience unlike any other.

Beyond the renowned public courses, Scottsdale is also home to some of the country’s most exclusive private clubs, such as Whisper Rock, Desert Mountain, and Silverleaf. Access often depends on personal connections, which makes it worth reaching out to colleagues, clients, or even fraternity brothers who might be members. An invitation to play at one of these private clubs is a rare and memorable experience that adds a special layer to any Scottsdale golf trip.

We-Ko-Pa and Grayhawk round out the public golf offerings, delivering even more variety and making Scottsdale an unmatched choice for trips with other golf friends, couples’ getaways, or family vacations where golf takes center stage.

Beyond the Greens: Scottsdale is just as captivating off the course as it is on it. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike Camelback Mountain, Pinnacle Peak, or McDowell Sonoran Preserve, while architecture lovers can explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Scottsdale is also a wellness capital, with award-winning spas like those at The Phoenician and Sanctuary Camelback Mountain. Dining has blossomed into one of the best culinary scenes in the Southwest, with James Beard Award-winning chefs, vibrant cocktail bars, and a mix of desert-inspired and global cuisine. The arts scene thrives as well, from galleries in Old Town to seasonal events like the Scottsdale Arts Festival.

Scottsdale is also the hub of Major League Baseball’s Cactus League Spring Training, where fans can watch teams such as the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies. For sports lovers, it’s a rare opportunity to pair a round of desert golf with an afternoon at the ballpark.

Where to Stay in Scottsdale:

  • The Phoenician – A Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond resort, featuring its own 27-hole golf course, a Forbes Five-Star spa, multiple dining venues including J&G Steakhouse, and a spectacular multi-tier pool complex with Camelback Mountain views. It remains one of Scottsdale’s most iconic properties.

  • Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North – Nestled in the high desert, this resort offers adobe-style casitas with fireplaces and sweeping views. Guests enjoy private shuttle service to Troon North’s courses, a Forbes Five-Star spa, and elevated dining with desert panoramas.

Bungalow-style accommodations, three pools, curated art collaborations, and inventive dining make it ideal for travelers seeking something contemporary and creative.

Extensions to Sedona & Tucson: For travelers with more time, Scottsdale can be the gateway to two of Arizona’s most distinctive destinations. Sedona, two hours north, is famed for its red rock formations and spiritual energy. Stay at Enchantment Resort, tucked into Boynton Canyon with direct access to hiking trails and the acclaimed Mii amo Spa, or Ambiente, A Landscape Hotel, an adults-only retreat where sleek glass-walled atriums immerse guests in the desert’s dramatic scenery. To the south, Tucson is synonymous with world-class wellness. Miraval Arizona and Canyon Ranch are internationally recognized for transformative retreats, blending mindfulness, fitness, nutrition, and spa therapies in serene desert settings. Pairing Scottsdale’s golf with Sedona’s scenery or Tucson’s wellness creates a perfectly balanced Arizona itinerary.

3. Kiawah Island, South Carolina

The Golf: Kiawah Island is one of America’s premier golf destinations, anchored by the legendary Ocean Course, Pete Dye’s windswept masterpiece. Opened in 1991 for the Ryder Cup—nicknamed the “War by the Shore”—the Ocean Course is renowned for its seaside holes, fierce Atlantic winds, and Dye’s signature bunkering. It consistently ranks it among the toughest courses in the U.S. and one of the best public courses in the country.

Kiawah, however, offers much more than just the Ocean Course. Its four additional championship layouts—Turtle Point by Jack Nicklaus, Osprey Point by Tom Fazio, Cougar Point by Gary Player, and Oak Point by Clyde Johnston—give golfers variety, challenge, and scenic beauty across marshlands, maritime forests, and lagoons. Together, these five courses make Kiawah one of the most comprehensive golf resorts in the United States.

Beyond the Greens: Kiawah’s natural setting is just as appealing as its golf. The island is home to 10 miles of pristine beaches, more than 30 miles of biking trails, and tidal creeks perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Dolphin sightings are common, and the island’s emphasis on conservation keeps its landscapes unspoiled. For a cultural extension, Charleston is less than an hour away. Consistently ranked the No. 1 city in the U.S. by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards (Condé Nast Traveler), Charleston enchants with cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and a dining scene that blends Southern tradition with contemporary innovation.

Where to Stay:

  • The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort – A Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond oceanfront resort that blends Southern charm with refined luxury. Guests enjoy elegant accommodations, sweeping ocean views, and one of the few Forbes Five-Star spas in South Carolina (Forbes Travel Guide). Dining includes the signature Ocean Room steakhouse, Jasmine Porch for Lowcountry cuisine, and the Loggerhead Grill by the pool.
  • The Charleston Place – An AAA Five Diamond property in Charleston’s historic district. Known for refined Southern hospitality, it features luxurious rooms, a rooftop pool with city views, and the renowned Charleston Grill, which has been praised by Travel + Leisure for its elevated Southern fare.

  • Hotel Bennett – Overlooking Marion Square, Hotel Bennett combines European-inspired design with Charleston’s historic setting. Highlights include the stylish rooftop restaurant and bar Fiat Lux, a celebrated French patisserie, and elegant interiors that have made it a favorite in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards

4. Pinehurst, North Carolina

The Golf: Pinehurst is often referred to as the Cradle of American Golf and with good reason. The resort features nine courses, but its crown jewel is Pinehurst No. 2, designed by Donald Ross in 1907. Famous for its challenging turtleback greens and strategic bunkering, No. 2 has hosted more major championships than any other course in the United States, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, and Ryder Cup. It is also slated to host multiple future U.S. Opens, solidifying its reputation as one of the most important venues in golf history.

Pinehurst also features The Cradle, a nine-hole short course deemed “the most fun 10 acres in golf.” Designed to be approachable and entertaining, it’s an ideal spot for families to enjoy the game together, for children and newer golfers to learn in a relaxed setting, and for seasoned players to practice their short game while embracing the patience needed to play alongside less experienced friends or loved ones.

Beyond the Greens: Off the fairways, the Village of Pinehurst feels like stepping back in time, with brick sidewalks, quaint shops, and manicured gardens. The Tufts Archives document the history of golf in America and Donald Ross’s enduring influence. Beyond the village, the Sandhills region offers equestrian activities, hiking, and birdwatching in natural preserves like the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, known for its rare longleaf pines. For those seeking cultural diversions, Southern Pines—just minutes away—offers galleries, dining, and craft breweries that round out a visit.

Where to Stay:

  • The Carolina Hotel – Nicknamed the “Queen of the South,” this historic property blends grandeur with Southern hospitality. Known for its sweeping verandas, refined dining at the Carolina Dining Room, and proximity to Pinehurst’s championship courses, it has been welcoming golfers for over a century.
  • The Holly Inn – Opened in 1895 as the first hotel at Pinehurst, this charming property offers a more intimate stay with Victorian-style architecture, gardens, and close access to the Village. Its historic atmosphere makes it a favorite for returning guests.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte – For those who want to pair golf with a vibrant city experience, this LEED Gold-certified luxury hotel offers rooftop gardens, craft cocktails, and Forbes Four-Star dining. It provides a modern contrast to the historic charm of Pinehurst, perfect for a pre- or post-golf city break.

5. Sea Island, Georgia

The Golf: Sea Island is home to three championship courses—Seaside, Plantation, and Retreat—that make it one of the premier golf resorts in the Southeast. The Seaside Course, a Tom Fazio redesign, is the jewel of the island and a regular stop on the RSM Classic, a PGA Tour event that attracts many of the world’s best players (PGATour.com). Beyond the courses, Sea Island’s Golf Performance Center has earned international acclaim as one of the top training facilities in the world, used by professionals and amateurs alike to refine every aspect of their game.

Beyond the Greens: The Golden Isles offer a diverse range of outdoor and cultural experiences. Guests can enjoy deep-sea fishing charters, sailing excursions, and guided kayaking through tidal marshes. On land, horseback riding along secluded beaches or exploring miles of biking trails are popular ways to discover the island’s natural beauty. St. Simons Island, just across the causeway, provides historic charm with landmarks like the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and lively shopping districts (Explore Georgia). For a cultural extension, Savannah—about 90 minutes away—is known for its cobblestone squares, antebellum architecture, and one of the South’s most celebrated dining scenes. From fresh oysters at The Grey Market to refined Southern cuisine at Elizabeth on 37th, the city has an impressive restaurant scene.

Where to Stay:

  • The Cloister – A Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond resort with Mediterranean-style architecture, private beach access, and a Forbes Five-Star spa. Its elegant design, riverside dining, and family-friendly activities make it the flagship property of Sea Island.
  • The Lodge – Styled as a Scottish manor, this intimate retreat overlooks the Atlantic and the Seaside Course. Known for its butler service, wood-paneled lounges, and nightly bagpiper serenade, it offers an atmosphere of exclusivity and tradition.
  • JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside – Located in Savannah’s historic district, this reimagined power plant blends eclectic art and industrial-chic design. Rooftop dining at Electric Moon, live music, and riverside views make it a lively complement to Sea Island’s resort experience.

6. Maui, Hawaii

The Golf: Maui combines the beauty of a tropical paradise with the prestige of world-class golf. The island’s crown jewel is the Plantation Course at Kapalua, home of the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions. This course is revered for its sweeping ocean views, dramatic elevation changes, and fairways that tumble down toward the Pacific. For many professionals, it is the most breathtaking start to the season, and for visitors, it’s a chance to play where champions have teed it up. On the sunny south shore, Wailea Golf Club offers three distinctive championship courses—Gold, Emerald, and Blue—each blending lush landscapes with panoramic ocean vistas. Together, they create a variety of experiences that make Maui a year-round golfer’s paradise.

Beyond the Greens: While golf is a highlight, Maui is equally celebrated as one of the world’s top vacation destinations, and any trip here should balance time on the course with time to unwind. Relax poolside under swaying palms, snorkel the crystalline waters of Molokini Crater, or embark on a whale-watching tour between December and April when humpbacks migrate through the warm channels. Adventurers can rise early for sunrise above the clouds at Haleakalā National Park, or hike the island’s bamboo forests and hidden waterfalls. Evenings bring the chance to experience a traditional Hawaiian luau, blending music, hula, and culinary tradition. For dining, Wailea and Lahaina are hubs of farm-to-table cuisine, with local chefs celebrating Maui’s agricultural bounty alongside fresh seafood caught daily.

Where to Stay:

  • The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua – A Forbes Five-Star resort offering cultural immersion programs that honor Hawaiian traditions, multiple pools with ocean views, and direct access to Kapalua Golf’s championship courses. Guests can enjoy guided hikes, oceanfront dining, and a celebrated spa that reflects the healing traditions of the islands.

7. Southern California (San Diego & Palm Springs)

The Golf: Southern California blends championship pedigree with unforgettable scenery. In San Diego, Torrey Pines Golf Course stands as a public golf legend, with two layouts perched on bluffs above the Pacific Ocean. Host of multiple U.S. Opens, including Tiger Woods’ storied 2008 victory, Torrey Pines remains a must-play for golfers seeking history and breathtaking views. Further inland, Palm Springs provides an entirely different golfing experience with its desert landscapes and mountain backdrops. Courses such as PGA West’s Stadium Course, Indian Wells Golf Resort, and more than 100 additional desert layouts make this region a year-round haven for golfers.

Beyond the Greens: For us, Southern California feels like a second home—co-founder Janet Semenova and several of our advisors live here and bring insider knowledge of the region to every itinerary. San Diego itself offers a wealth of attractions: the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, the cultural treasures of Balboa Park, and the beaches of La Jolla, where sea lions sunbathe on the rocks and kayakers explore sea caves. Palm Springs, by contrast, is beloved for its mid-century modern architecture tours, hot mineral springs, luxury spa resorts, and easy access to Joshua Tree National Park.

For those with more time, Southern California invites travelers to journey further up the coast. Orange County offers charming seaside communities, with Laguna Beach standing out as a top recommendation—especially in summer. Known for its art festivals, boutique shopping, coves, and dramatic coastal trails, Laguna is an ideal retreat for our Arizona clients seeking cooler temperatures and ocean breezes. Combining San Diego, Palm Springs, and Laguna Beach creates a well-rounded Southern California escape that blends golf, culture, and coastal relaxation.

Where to Stay:

  • Fairmont Grand Del Mar – A Forbes Five-Star resort recognized for excellence in both accommodations and dining, featuring its own Tom Fazio-designed golf course and one of Southern California’s most celebrated spas.

8. Austin, Texas

The Golf: Austin has quietly become one of Texas’s premier golf destinations. Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa anchors the city’s golf scene with four championship courses: Fazio Canyons, Fazio Foothills, Coore Crenshaw Cliffside, and Palmer Lakeside. Each layout offers a different experience of Texas Hill Country, from dramatic canyons and elevated tees to rolling greens tucked against limestone cliffs. For those looking to venture beyond Austin, the Omni PGA Frisco—just three hours north—has cemented Texas as one of America’s leading golf states, with two championship courses, a short course, and a putting “green” that is larger than many entire golf facilities.

Beyond the Greens: Austin is a city where culture, creativity, and energy collide. Known as the “Live Music Capital of the World”, it’s home to hundreds of venues ranging from legendary spots like the Continental Club to buzzing downtown rooftops. The city also hosts world-renowned festivals including South by Southwest (SXSW), which draws innovators, artists, and performers from around the globe, and Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival, set in Zilker Park each fall.

The University of Texas at Austin adds a collegiate vibrancy to the city, bringing with it major sporting events, cultural institutions like the Blanton Museum of Art, and a youthful spirit that fuels the city’s nightlife.

Food is another cornerstone of Austin’s appeal. It is often hailed as one of America’s top culinary cities, famous for barbecue institutions like Franklin Barbecue and La Barbecue, Tex-Mex classics, and a thriving farm-to-table scene that rivals larger metropolitan areas. Food trucks are also a local tradition, serving everything from gourmet tacos to inventive global street food.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore as well: paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake, swimming at Barton Springs Pool, or hiking the trails of Hill Country. Austin balances big-city energy with natural escapes, making it an all-around destination where golfers and non-golfers alike will feel at home.

Where to Stay:

  • Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection – A historic 1920s estate transformed into one of the city’s most stylish boutique hotels. Surrounded by curated gardens and filled with European-inspired design, it offers refined dining and the intimate service Auberge is known for.

9. Big Sky, Montana

The Golf: While Big Sky is most famous as a world-class ski destination, summer reveals a different side of the mountains—one that’s perfect for golfers. The crown jewel is Moonlight Basin’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, a dramatic alpine layout set at 7,500 feet above sea level. With sweeping fairways, towering pines, and panoramic views of Lone Mountain, it’s one of the most striking mountain golf courses in the country. The high elevation makes every drive feel even more powerful, and the natural terrain offers both challenge and beauty. The golf season here runs from late June through early September, when the alpine meadows are in bloom and the days are long.

Beyond the Greens: Big Sky embodies rustic outdoor luxury. In winter, it transforms into one of America’s premier ski destinations, with more than 5,800 acres of skiable terrain across four connected mountains. In summer, it becomes a playground for adventurers and families alike—fly fishing on the Gallatin River, horseback riding through wildflower fields, hiking alpine trails, and whitewater rafting are all part of the experience. Nearby Yellowstone National Park adds another layer of wonder, with geothermal landmarks like Old Faithful and abundant wildlife. Whether you’re carving powder runs in January or teeing it up in July, Big Sky offers an extraordinary year-round escape.

Where to Stay:

  • One&Only Moonlight Basin – Opening in 2025, this will be One&Only’s first U.S. property, combining contemporary alpine architecture with the brand’s signature ultra-luxury service. Guests will enjoy exclusive access to Moonlight Basin Golf Club, along with curated dining, wellness programming, and residences designed for extended stays.

With its expansive Spa Montage, multiple dining venues celebrating Montana’s culinary traditions, and a design that blends mountain chic with rustic elegance, it captures the essence of outdoor luxury year-round.

10. Los Cabos, Mexico for its U.S. Proximity

The Golf: Los Cabos is a premier golf destination that captivates golfers with its stunning desert landscapes and oceanfront views. The region is home to iconic courses like the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, designed by Jack Nicklaus, which offers breathtaking vistas of the Sea of Cortez from nearly every hole. Another standout is the historic Pebble Beach Golf Club counterpart, Quivira Golf Club, with its dramatic cliffs and breathtaking ocean holes. For those seeking a championship challenge, the Cabo del Sol’s Desert Course presents a thrilling layout framed by breathtaking vistas of the Baja Peninsula’s rugged mountains and serene desert. Los Cabos is a golfer’s paradise, blending top-tier facilities with an unforgettable natural backdrop.

Adventurers may also appreciate rugged ATV tours through desert terrain or deep-sea fishing excursions. As the sun sets, the lively nightlife comes alive with beachside bars and gourmet dining options celebrating local cuisine. Seafood lovers will delight in fresh catches, prepared with traditional Mexican flavors, while upscale restaurants and local taquerias offer an array of culinary experiences.

Italy’s allure lies not only in its fine wines but in its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and indulgent experiences. Through Wines of Italy Tours, participants enjoy curated vineyard adventures, exploring Italy’s premier wine regions. But why stop there? Boutique Travel Advisors advisor Kim Parizek has partnered up with Wines of Italy Tours to specialize in creating personalized pre- and post-tour itineraries to complete any Italian escape.

Top Italian Wine Regions

Tuscany, one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions, is a land of undulating hills, sun-soaked vineyards, and medieval towns steeped in history. Renowned for producing world-class wines like Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the region combines ancient winemaking traditions with breathtaking scenery. From the cypress-lined roads of Val d’Orcia to the charming hilltop villages of San Gimignano and Montepulciano, Tuscany offers a blend of culture, cuisine, and unparalleled wine experiences that epitomize the essence of Italian viticulture.

Piedmont, nestled in Italy’s northwest, is a wine lover’s paradise renowned for producing some of the country’s most prestigious wines, including Barolo, Barbaresco, and Barbera. The region’s picturesque Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato areas, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, feature dramatic rolling hills blanketed in vineyards and dotted with ancient castles and charming villages. With its truffle markets in Alba, celebrated hazelnut groves, and Michelin-starred restaurants, Piedmont offers an unparalleled pairing of wine and gastronomy that captures the heart of Italian culinary excellence. For more inspiration, check out our previous blog on how to plan the proper trip to Piedmont.

Veneto, in northeastern Italy, is a diverse wine region known for its sparkling Prosecco, robust Amarone della Valpolicella, and crisp Soave wines. The region’s unique terroir stretches from the Alpine foothills to the Adriatic coast, offering varied landscapes and microclimates perfect for winemaking. Vineyards blanket the rolling hills of Valpolicella and the Prosecco Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while charming cities like Verona and Venice add cultural richness. Veneto’s wines pair beautifully with the region’s cuisine, from fresh seafood to rich risottos.

Sicily, Italy’s largest island, is a captivating wine region celebrated for its bold flavors and diverse varietals. The volcanic soils of Mount Etna produce distinctive wines like Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco, known for their mineral complexity. Sicily is also home to Nero d’Avola, the island’s flagship red, and sweet Marsala, perfect for dessert. The warm Mediterranean climate and coastal breezes create ideal growing conditions, while ancient ruins, vibrant markets, and coastal charm make Sicily a must-visit destination for wine and culture enthusiasts alike.

Stay at Belmond Hotel Caruso in Ravello, perched on cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, or opt for the iconic Le Sirenuse in Positano, offering panoramic views of the coast and the sparkling Mediterranean. Visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, where the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD froze daily life in time. The sites provide a rare and fascinating glimpse into Roman history and culture. On the water, take a leisurely sailing tour of the Amalfi coastline, stopping to explore hidden coves and secluded beaches. Finish your day with a visit to a local lemon grove, where you’ll learn about the cultivation of the famous Amalfi lemons and indulge in a limoncello tasting, a sweet and tangy tradition of the region. At Boutique Travel Advisors, we know what it takes to plan the best trip to the Amalfi Coast for food, wine, and culture lovers.

Venice and Veneto

In the Veneto region, where art and wine converge, The Gritti Palace offers a luxurious stay with views over Venice’s canals. Spend your days meandering through the city’s labyrinth of waterways, perhaps even enjoying a traditional gondola ride. Venice’s charm lies in its architectural beauty, from the iconic Piazza San Marco to the elaborate palaces lining the canals. Venture into the nearby Prosecco Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to sample some of Italy’s finest sparkling wines, known for their light and crisp flavors. A short trip will take you to Murano, where you can watch master glassblowers craft intricate pieces of glass art, and to Burano, famous for its brightly colored houses and lace-making tradition.

Piedmont

For wine enthusiasts, the Piedmont region offers an unforgettable escape. Stay at Albergo dell’Agenzia, a luxury hotel surrounded by vineyards, giving you easy access to the famous wine-producing areas of Barolo and Barbaresco. Experience private wine tastings, where you can savor some of Italy’s most celebrated wines, including the full-bodied Barolo and the elegant Barbaresco. Explore Alba’s truffle markets, where you can discover the highly prized white truffles that make this region famous. Finish your stay with a meal at one of Piedmont’s Michelin-starred restaurants, where you’ll dine on regional specialties like agnolotti and vitello tonnato, paired with the region’s best wines.

While your wine tour in Italy will be the highlight, you have the flexibility to customize both your pre and post-trip experiences. Whether you dream of wandering through the charming streets of France, soaking up the sun on the beaches of Spain, or exploring the historic landmarks of other European countries, the choice is yours. Add a relaxing beach getaway, a cultural city tour, or a scenic train journey through the European countryside—whatever suits your interests and desires. As your dedicated travel advisors, we will be delighted to curate a personalized itinerary that encompasses your preferences and ensures an unforgettable journey through this captivating country.

Cruise vs. Land Itinerary:

Here are some insights regarding the differences between taking a cruise in Spain and doing a land itinerary.

Taking a cruise in Spain offers a unique and convenient way to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the comfort and amenities of a cruise ship.

Cruise Vs. Land Adventure

When it comes to exploring the captivating splendors of Spain, travelers are often faced with a delightful dilemma: should they opt for a land itinerary or embark on a luxurious cruise? Each option offers a unique perspective and a distinct set of advantages. A land itinerary allows you to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Spanish culture, from strolling through charming cobblestone streets to savoring authentic cuisine in local eateries. You have the freedom to delve deeper into the heart of each destination, uncovering hidden gems and experiencing the vibrant energy of cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville.

On the other hand, a cruise offers the allure of waking up to a new port of call each day, effortlessly gliding along the picturesque coastlines of Spain. From the sun-drenched beaches of the Costa del Sol to the historic treasures of Valencia and the Balearic Islands, a cruise allows you to explore multiple destinations and indulge in luxurious amenities onboard easily. Be sure to check out our guide on choosing the right cruise for your travel style! This cruise line may differ if you plan on turning your trip to the splendors of Spain into a family trip.

Whether you choose a land itinerary or a cruise, Spain promises an unforgettable journey filled with cultural immersion, breathtaking landscapes, and the warm hospitality that the country is renowned for. Let us help you navigate this decision and curate a personalized experience that perfectly suits your travel preferences and desires.

Benefits of Cruises:

1. Variety of destinations:

Cruises often visit multiple ports, allowing you to experience different cities and regions within Spain. This can be particularly appealing if you have limited time and want to see as much as possible without spending significant time in transit.

2. All-inclusive experience:

Cruises typically include accommodations, meals, and entertainment, making it easier to budget for your trip. You can enjoy various onboard activities and amenities, such as pools, spas, and live performances.

3. Hassle-free transportation:

With a cruise, you don’t have to worry about arranging transportation between cities or dealing with logistics like packing and unpacking. The ship becomes your floating hotel; you can simply relax and enjoy the journey.

Multiple Countries:

When embarking on a cruise to the splendors of Spain, travelers can look forward to exploring the captivating cities and coastal regions of Spain and the opportunity to visit other fascinating countries in the region. Some of the popular countries that cruises to Spain may visit include:

1. Portugal: A neighboring country to Spain, Portugal offers a wealth of cultural and historical treasures, and adventures. From the charming streets of Lisbon to the picturesque Douro Valley and the stunning beaches of the Algarve, Portugal is a destination that seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern sophistication. You could also consider visiting Portugal on the front or back end of your trip to Spain.

2. France: Many cruises to Spain include stops in France, allowing travelers to experience the best of both countries. From the glamorous French Riviera with its iconic cities like Nice and Cannes to the historic port city of Marseille and the enchanting island of Corsica, France offers a diverse range of experiences.

3. Italy: Some cruises may also include ports of call in Italy, adding an extra layer of Mediterranean allure to your journey. Italy offers a wealth of cultural, culinary, and historical delights, from the eternal city of Rome to the romantic canals of Venice, the stunning Amalfi Coast, and the historic ruins of Pompeii.

4. Morocco: For those seeking a touch of exoticism, some cruises to Spain may include stops in Morocco. From the vibrant markets of Marrakech to the ancient medina of Fez and the coastal city of Casablanca, Morocco offers a fascinating blend of Arab, Berber, and European influences.

These are just a few examples of the countries that cruises to Spain often visit. The specific itinerary will vary depending on the cruise line and the duration of the voyage. Our experienced travel advisors can help you choose the perfect cruise that includes the destinations you desire, ensuring a truly unforgettable journey through the Mediterranean.

Downsides of cruises to consider:

1. Limited time in each destination:

Due to the nature of cruising, you may have limited time to explore each port. This can restrict your ability to immerse yourself in the local culture and attractions fully.

2. Crowded tourist areas:

Popular cruise ports can become crowded with tourists, especially during peak travel seasons. This may impact your experience at the splendors of Spain and limit your ability to have a more authentic and intimate connection with the destination. This is one of the reasons we recommend traveling on smaller boutique cruise lines, which typically visit smaller and more authentic ports that the large ships cannot get into.

On the other hand, a land itinerary in Spain allows for a more in-depth exploration of specific regions or cities.

Benefits of a land itinerary:

1. Flexibility and freedom:

With a land itinerary, you can customize your trip according to your preferences. You can spend more time in your favorite destinations, discover hidden gems, and have a more immersive experience.

2. Cultural immersion:

Staying in one place for an extended period allows you to truly immerse yourself in the local culture, interact with locals, and experience the authentic way of life in Spain.

3. Off-the-beaten-path experiences:

A land itinerary allows you to explore lesser-known destinations and attractions that may not be accessible on a cruise. This can provide a more unique and personalized travel experience.

Downsides to consider on a land itinerary:

1. Logistics and planning:

Planning a land itinerary requires more time and effort to arrange accommodations, transportation, and activities. It may also involve more logistical challenges, such as navigating public transport or driving in unfamiliar areas. In order to ease the stress of planning your own land itinerary, be sure to work with an experienced luxury travel advisor.

2. Potentially higher costs:

Depending on your preferences and the level of luxury you desire, a land itinerary in Spain can be more expensive than a cruise. This is due to factors such as accommodation costs, transportation, inter-country logistics and dining expenses.

In conclusion, a visit to Spain is an experience that will leave an indelible mark on your heart and soul. From the vibrant cities pulsating with energy to the serene countryside dotted with picturesque villages, this country offers a tapestry of experiences that cater to every traveler’s desires. Whether you explore the architectural wonders of Barcelona, immerse yourself in the rich history of Madrid, or bask in the sun on the pristine beaches of the Costa del Sol, Spain has something for everyone.

Let us help you uncover the hidden gems, indulge in exquisite cuisine, and create memories that will last a lifetime. With our commitment to responsible and eco-friendly travel, you can rest assured that your visit to  the splendors of Spain will not only be luxurious but also leave a positive impact on the environment and local communities. Rest assured that all of our recommendations are made whole-heartedly with the intent of helping travelers like you discover the world authentically and responsibly.

Most of us have been taking “group trips” our entire lives: starting with our family vacations, college spring break or study abroad, and weekend trips with girlfriends, “the boys,” or our significant other. It’s a wonderful gift to explore new destinations and try new things with the people close to us!

But have you ever joined a group trip as a solo traveler?

I’m a nomad, and I’ve been solo traveling full-time since 2020 (and had my first solo trip at age 20!) — and while I love the confidence boost I get from navigating unfamiliar terrain and the complete flexibility in my schedule…

…I also loooove a group tour or a group trip. (Here’s a recent experience from the jungles of Mexico!

From Patagonia to Egypt to the Galapagos Islands to Iceland, here are several compelling reasons why solo travelers of all ages should consider traveling with a group. Let’s count them down.

Reason #6: Safety in numbers

Traveling alone can be exciting, but it can also be a bit nerve racking, especially in unfamiliar locations. On a group trip, you have the added security of traveling with others: people to watch your back, groupthink to help you navigate tricky situations, a sense of community that can be invaluable when you’re far from home, and a literal “tribe” of people around you for safety in numbers.

Reason #5: Access to insider knowledge

On a group tour, especially one with tour guides, experts, and leaders, you have access to insider knowledge that you might not otherwise have. Tour guides, for example, can provide you with valuable insights into the history and culture of the destinations you’re visiting, while local experts can show you hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path attractions that you might miss on your own. Plus, traveling with a group can also give you access to special discounts and volume deals that you might not be able to get as a solo traveler.

Group Trip

Reason #4: The chance to meet new people

One of the best things about group travel is the opportunity to meet new people and make lasting friendships. When you’re traveling alone, it can be difficult to strike up a conversation with strangers, especially if you’re shy or introverted. But when you’re part of a group, you’ll have built-in social opportunities and a ready-made group of travel companions who share your passion for adventure. Plus, group travel can be a great way to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures, broadening your horizons and expanding your worldview.

Group Trip

Reason #3: A lower-stress travel experience

Let’s face it, travel planning can be stressful, especially if you’re trying to coordinate flights, accommodations, activities, and transportation all on your own. (Believe me, I spent a lot of time researching and planning, and one of my least favorite things about a nomadic lifestyle, traveling full-time. It’s overwhelming!) When you join a group trip, all of those details are taken care of for you, so you can relax and focus on enjoying your adventure. You won’t have to worry about getting lost, missing a bus, or dealing with unexpected challenges — group tours take the pressure off and let someone else do the heavy lifting for a change.

Reason #2: Unique and memorable experiences

Finally, one of the biggest benefits of group travel is the unique and memorable experiences you’ll have along the way. Whether you’re hiking through the jungle, exploring ancient ruins, snorkeling or waterfall rappelling, or sampling local cuisine, you’ll be doing it with a group of like-minded adventurers who share your sense of wonder and excitement. And because group travel often includes activities and experiences that are difficult or impossible to arrange on your own, you’ll come away with stories, memories, and even friendships that will last a lifetime.

Group Trip

Reason #1: So you’ll actually go ❤️

One of the things I hear from my readers and clients is, “I want to travel, but I don’t have anyone to go with.” And to me, a group tour or group trip is the perfect solution.

Don’t wait for somebody to join you. Don’t wait for their calendar to open up, for them to be able to afford it, for them to change their mind, for your relationship to improve, or for that love interest to finally show up in your life… GO on your dream trip! YOU CAN, and YOU CAN NOW.

In summary, while solo travel is invigorating and fulfilling, I believe joining a group trip provides solo travelers with unique and rewarding adventure AND social opportunities when traveling — a phenomenon of which I can attest!

Some of my favorite group tour operators for solo travelers:

G Adventures boasts “the freedom of solo travel. The comfort of a group,” and group sizes are small and intimate at 10-16 people. Trips fit all budgets, span all activity levels, and all trip lengths — and circle the globe! The tours on my G Adventures bucket list include Argentina: Hike Patagonia In Depth, The Great Southern Africa Safari, and Spain: Camino de Santiago Encompassed

Backroads incorporates an active lifestyle into international travel so you can use the best-in-class equipment and go at your own pace on tours in 50 countries across the world. (I’m definitely one of those people who likes to stay active on vacation and appreciates bonding over breakin’ a sweat!)

“Since 1979, we’ve been doing what we do best: taking people on unforgettable Biking, Walking & Hiking and Multi-Adventure Trips around the world,” their website says. “Take it easy or take it up a notch with a range of daily activity levels. It’s up to you — do as much or as little as you like with fun people, every day of every trip.”

Some of my Backroads bucket list trips include Alaska’s Kenai Multi-Adventure Tour, Berlin to Prague Bike Tour, and Galápagos, Andes & Amazon River Cruise Walking & Hiking Tour.

Project Expedition aggregates the best-of-the-best excursions, day trips, and multi-day tours from vetted and highly-rated operators in regions around the world. My shortlist includes this Small Group 9 Day Iceland Complete Adventure and this Africa: 4-Night, 5-Day Best of Kruger Safari.

If you want to book these trips or any others, contact me!

Did you know… you can also travel with ME?! Join my next group tour: 7 days in Oaxaca for Day of the Dead!

I’m hosting my first group trip from October 28 to November 3, 2023 in Oaxaca, Mexico, during Day of the Dead — a multi-day holiday that combines indigenous traditions with Catholicism to honor and remember deceased loved ones — an event that brings hundreds of thousands of tourists to Mexico each year!

It’s a colorful and joyful time of year, reflecting celebration rather than grief, and Oaxaca is far and wide considered the premier destination to take part in the holiday. We’ll watch and join the parades and celebrations, take a mole cooking class, and visit the ancient archaeological site of Monte Alban and the beautiful natural phenomenon Hierve el Agua, accompanied by professional guides and myself (an American expat and Mexican travel expert!).

There are a handful of spots currently available on my 7-day group trip in Oaxaca City, which includes guides, 6 nights of shared accommodation in hotel/s, 6 breakfasts and one lunch, and private transportation — for a total of $1,899 USD per person. What’s not included: airfare to OAX and trip insurance. Read G Adventures’ full itinerary here!

In order to save your spot in my group, we just need a $350 deposit per person. Email me with 1) your full name as it is on your passport 2) your country of citizenship 3) and your DOB — and I’ll send you G Adventures’ payment link for the deposit payment of $350. This tour WILL sell out, so I recommend anyone who is interested to act fast. The rest of the tour will be paid closer to departure, but the $350 holds your spot!

Julie’s second group trip: 9 days hiking Patagonia [SOLD OUT!]

As a destination for active travelers, Patagonia is nothing short of iconic… and the very best way to do this South American region justice is to hike all over it. Trek through the crisp air of El Chaltén (with its crazy beautiful Cerro Torre mountain) and then to the area near the imposing Perito Moreno Glacier. In between, marvel at the giant sky, vast views, and big city appeal of Buenos Aires while you revel in a sense of personal triumph. This trip is sold out — Patagonia’s ready and waiting!!

I hope you’ll join me in Mexico OR feel inspired to plan your own solo adventure in a group! Contact me to book any of these exciting destinations. Also, fill out this form to be the first to know about other group trips I’ll host in the future. Buen viaje, amigos and amigas! ❤️

1. Set your budget and work backward –

To start planning your best family vacation, be sure to come up with a budget. We call this reverse engineering. Establishing a budget will help you determine the length of your trip, where you can travel to, and what type of accommodations or activities you would like to participate in. Calculating how much money you need for each leg of the journey ahead of time will help keep unnecessary expenses in check while ensuring that you have enough funds available for an enjoyable trip.

Consider where you want to go when allocating portions of your budget. For example, suppose you are planning to spend a week relaxing in a beautiful beach destination and want to stay at an all-inclusive property. In that case, you should allocate most of the budget towards the hotel and airfare, with about 10-15% reserved for tours, activities or unique experiences. On the flip side, if you are planning a trip to Europe and want to spend a week exploring Italy and a week in France, you should budget for the flight upfront and then divide the rest of your budget equally between Italy and France. Plan to allocate about 40% towards accommodations and the rest towards transfers, rail tickets, tours, activities, guides and special experiences. Allow yourself the flexibility to move funds from one country to another depending on what activities you decide to do in each destination.

Make sure also to consider unexpected costs like ATM fees, laundry or food that your initial budget may not cover. Finally, always plan to buy travel insurance to protect your health and ensure the trip’s cost is protected.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s idea of a perfect vacation differs; some people prefer to allocate more of their budget towards luxury accommodations, while others value having experienced and professional drivers and guides. Talk to your travel advisor about what is important to you and your family on each trip.

2. Make sure all passports and travel documents are up to date

This is a crucial step in planning your best family vacation that should not be overlooked. Before you even begin the planning process, ensure that all of your family’s passports have at least six months of validity before they expire. Otherwise, you may run into delays or denials at border control. Additionally, look up the visa requirements for each country you plan to visit and apply for them in advance, you don’t want to be stressing close to departure.

Certain destinations recommend vaccinations against local diseases, while others mandate them. Research the immunizations you and your family need, and make sure to get up to date with all your vaccines before traveling. Talk to your primary care physicians and make sure that you take any necessary precautions or medications along with you.

3. Figure out your dates – but be flexible and a little sneaky

As most parents will woefully admit, our lives are often dictated by the moods, schedules, and, yes, even whims of the tiny human beings in our lives. When planning family vacations, one of the first considerations for most parents is their children’s school schedule. Airlines, hotels, and tour companies are all too aware of this fact and price their services accordingly. Supply and demand are, after all, the mainstays of business.

Of course, with any planned trip, it is always best to avoid peak-season travel. But if you must travel during school holidays, research destinations that are in shoulder season or even off-season to save thousands of dollars and avoid peak season crowds.

This may involve switching your mindset. For example, Mexico and the Caribbean are popular destinations over winter break, and prices surge as much of the country is battling snow storms and grey days.

However, it is just as enjoyable but much more affordable and quiet during the summer. The reverse is true for Europe, which is busy and expensive during its peak summer season but much more affordable over the winter holidays. In addition, a winter adventure to Europe offers magical Christmas markets, winter wonderlands, world-class skiing, snow-covered peaks, and all the museums and attractions you’ve been dreaming of with a fraction of the crowds. The traveling international with as family myths are far from true, international vacations make for great family trips.

4. Choose a destination that offers a variety of experiences

If you’re traveling to a destination where the main activity is beach time, a few cold or rainy days can really put a damper on your plans. Instead, find destinations that offer a variety of activities. For example, while Costa Rica is a fantastic beach destination, it also provides ample opportunities for hiking, jungle treks, zip lining, canyoning, and rafting. These activities are less affected by the weather.

Many European cities offer an incredible variety of museums, cultural attractions, shows and interactive experiences that families can enjoy in any season. At the same time, they offer access to beautiful outdoor park areas, beaches, lakes, and mountains. Paris, London and Barcelona are some of our top choices for a city break family vacation with easy access to nearby outdoor recreation areas.

Planning Your Best Family Vacation

5. Contact a travel specialist for assistance –

If you’re having trouble sorting through travel options or finding affordable packages, you may want to consult a professional to plan your best family vacation. It’s easy to get overwhelmed doing all the research and planning yourself. After all, can you really trust the reviews, and how do you know which FB group post to believe when they all seem to say different things? Using a professional to curate your itinerary can save you dozens of hours and ensure your travel goals are achieved.

A good travel agent can help ensure that you’re getting the best value and that your vacation is tailored to your family’s interests, abilities, budget and style of travel. They can also help identify potential problem areas with certain destinations or activities. If possible, look for travel agencies specializing in family travel —they may have access to unique experiences and services you don’t even know exist.

How do you find the best travel agent? Begin by asking friends and family for recommendations — a personal referral is often the best place to start. Make sure you explain your needs and expectations clearly so the travel agent can give you the best advice possible. Be prepared with all relevant information, such as dates of travel, preferred destinations, and any special activities or services requested. You should also have a budget in mind before starting the planning process. Most agencies work with various suppliers who cater to different travel styles, from budget to ultra-luxury. Understanding your budget and travel needs will help them choose the best options for you.

Once you’ve identified a few potential travel agents, do the following.

  • Research their reputations. Check online reviews to get insights from other customers and determine if they offer the type of service that meets your needs.
  • Find out if the agency is part of consortia such as Virtuoso, which enables the agency to provide special amenities and VIP services and pass them on to the clients. Usually, this is found on their website, but you can also contact the company and ask questions directly.
  • Schedule an appointment. Most reputable travel agencies offer complimentary discovery calls to get to know you and see whether you are the right fit for each other. Beware of any agency promising you things like “cheapest prices”, “best deals,” or other platitudes that seem too good to be true.
  • Make sure whatever agency you choose is licensed and insured.
  • Find out the fee structure. Does the agency charge service fees, and if so, what do those fees inlcude?

When you’re ready to book your trip, it’s important to provide agents with as much information about your preferences as possible. Include details such as your desired accommodations, transportation preferences, preferred airlines or routes, activities that appeal to you, dietary restrictions if applicable, special events you may want to attend, and other important information.

Finally, don’t forget to ask questions before and after they start planning your best family vacation. Your agent should be able to answer all of your queries promptly and provide additional information if necessary. If there are certain restrictions or limitations that may influence your trip-planning process, make sure to discuss them with your agent as well.

Planning Your Best Family Vacation

6. Invest in quality attire and outdoor gear –

If you’re planning a winter wonderland adventure but live in a warm climate, consider appropriate attire and plan ahead. You don’t want to arrive at a beautiful ski destination only to find out the kids are freezing and miserable because they don’t have good gloves or warm enough coats. Make sure you invest in good boots and other quality apparel to keep the whole family warm and dry. Quality items are usually more expensive, but they last longer and can often be used on future trips. Check out local second-hand stores for kid’s attire, as they may only use it a few times before growing out of it. Also, if you’re going to be doing a lot of outdoor activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing, you want to ensure your gear is up-to-date and in good condition.

If you are unsure about the type of gear, you may need ask the locals for advice. The hotel concierge and local tour companies or activity providers have years of experience and can give you a general idea of the type of weather you are likely to encounter. If you are planning an outdoor adventure trip, ask your travel advisor whether the ground companies provide or rent equipment such as hiking poles, rain gear, snow pants, etc., so that you do not end up purchasing or packing items you do not need.

7. Think outside the box –

Dream of visiting France’s beautiful historic cities and famous beaches? So are millions of other travelers who drive up costs and crowds. If you are flexible with your schedule, plan the trip during shoulder season or consider a trip to Portugal or Northern Spain instead. With a bit of research and creative thinking, you can enjoy the same type of cultural experience at much lower prices.

If you live on the east coast and want to experience an incredible tropical adventure beach holiday and Maui is out of your budget or too far to fly, how about a trip to the Azores? The islands are only a 5-hour direct flight from major east coast cities such as Newark and Boston and offer adventure, relaxation and natural beauty for a much lower price point.

Planning Your Best Family Vacation

8. Pack light

Unless you plan on staying in one spot during your entire vacation, it’s important to pack light. Remind everyone in the family to bring only the essentials and avoid packing any other items you don’t absolutely need or can buy at your destination. This way, you won’t be weighed down during your travels. While airlines allow parents to check essential items like car seats and boosters without added fees, remember that these items are often available to rent from most car rental agencies and transfer companies as long as you let them know in advance.

If you’re traveling to a destination within the US, purchasing items and having them shipped to your hotel or villa can save considerable space and lower the cost of checked luggage. Many online retailers offer complimentary shipping to US destinations so you can easily purchase items before you leave and have them waiting for you when you arrive. If you are renting a villa with an onsite concierge, send them a list of items your family enjoys eating and drinking ahead of time and have your fridge pre-stocked with all your favorite comfort foods.

9. Get insurance

It is always a good idea to get travel insurance before embarking on a vacation. This is a vital step in planning your best family vacation. You never know when something might go wrong, such as having to cancel your trip or something important getting lost in transit. Travel insurance can help protect you from any unexpected costs that might occur during your vacation and give you peace of mind.

Planning Your Best Family Vacation

10. Have fun –

Remember to have a good time on your vacation, and don’t sweat the small stuff! Enjoy all the activities the area offers, take in the sights, try new things and make sure you have some much-needed rest and relaxation. Spend quality time with your loved ones, create memories that will last a lifetime, and come back home feeling refreshed and recharged! Good luck in planning your best family vacation!

Rest assured that all of our recommendations are made whole-heartedly with the intent of helping travelers like you discover the world authentically and responsibly.

Are you tired of the rush that comes with traveling to a new city or even a new country? Become inspired by slow travel also known as slow tourism. Slow travel is a travel philosophy that emphasizes spending more time in a single destination, traveling at a relaxed pace, and immersing oneself in the local culture. This trend is gaining popularity as travelers seek more authentic and meaningful experiences, reduce their environmental impact, and prioritize well-being and sustainability in their travels.

Before I became a full-time nomad, I would travel in the fashion of most every other American with a demanding job and limited vacation time: one week in Paris, nine days Greek island hopping, an extra long weekend in Cabo, or an add-on weekend extension of a work-trip.

This was less out of choice, but more out of circumstance — I didn’t have that much vacation time, or I didn’t want to use it all up in one go.

What I didn’t realize is that these shorter vacations meant I only ever dipped my toes into the feeling and the flavor of a place… I could hit the top 5 and top 10 “must-dos” and the best or most recommended restaurants in the city… but I felt my experience was lacking.

I wanted to feel like a local.

I yearned for a deeper, more authentic experience, something that I didn’t realize would soon be in my grasp, something that perhaps only sabbaticalists and retirees had figured out, something of Eat Pray Love fable… “slow travel.”

The Rise of Slow Travel

Ever since work-remote became mainstream (especially during the pandemic era), more and more people have been exploring “slow travel,” including myself. In March 2020, I road tripped and worked remotely through New Mexico and Texas for a month, cutting my plans short once the pandemic reared. In June, my dog and I road tripped some more through Wyoming and South Dakota. And in July 2020, I made the momentous decision to sell my house in Phoenix, liquidate my belongings, and travel full-time as a nomad — or perhaps, sometimes more aptly, “slo-mad.”

I spent the first month of nomad life in Boise, Idaho. A month in Boise allowed me to lean into community, find my favorite plate of nachos, identify the brewery or coffee shop that was the dog-friendliest, get off the beaten path and outside of town, and make friends that I saw again and again during my time there (and would later see elsewhere in the country!). It also allowed me to take rest and relaxation, and to pace myself — gone were the days of rushing to this top sight and that top sight, trying to fit too many things into one day, waking up early and going to bed exhausted with brain overload, and it saved me loads of disappointment if something “went wrong” or didn’t work out in terms of scheduling, weather, or the like.

I had discovered the joys of slow travel (slow tourism), over fast-paced or standard paced travel.

Slow Tourism

The Elimination of ‘Only Chance’

Not only is your experience deeper with slow travel, there isn’t an “only chance” to see the big stuff — a traveler has an opportunity to try again if those once-in-lifetime sights are closed, overbooked, or otherwise unavailable.

Like the time I missed out on marveling at one of the biggest churches in the world — La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona — because there were no more time slots available.

The time the Cliffs of Moher were invisible due to foggy and rainy weather, and I couldn’t see two feet ahead of me, much less the rugged and craggy landmark of Ireland.

The time I went to Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica to see sloths and monkeys amid lush rainforest, but unbeknownst to me, it was closed on Tuesdays.

At each disappointment, my heart fell. I had a pit in my stomach. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity lost. But with slow travel? There’s another shot. Not to mention how much more oriented and  adjusted you are after spending more than one week in a place!

Slow Travel

My Highlights

Since that month in Boise, I slow-traveled (which I’ll define — as there is no widely-accepted definition — at least three to four weeks in a single place) in Charleston, SC, Nashville, TN, Quebec, Canada, San Miguel de Allende, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico City, Mexico, and Split, Croatia. I’ve built close friendships, gone on dates and had romances, improved my Spanish, and explored nooks and crannies. I found my favorite taco, ceviche place or brunch spot, I’ve gone to the club for salsa dancing again and again, I was able to see the same foreign hair colorist months apart, and I’ve been able to have not one, not two, but many interactions with locals, fellow slow-travelers, and expats, asking the question, “What do you love about living or staying in ____ [insert city here]?” The answers are delightful, and the sample size is much larger than what limited exposure in a city might get me.

Some entrepreneurs, retirees, freelancers, or remote workers take it even farther than me, spending months, seasons or even years in a foreign locale — embedding themselves in the community, learning the ways of the land (or a language), and growing from immersion. These individuals often come away with the gift of growth, understanding, and a deep appreciation for another culture.

I love slow travel, and I think others do too, because it helps us discover: we are not so different after all, the human condition is universal, and that the world has a lot to offer outside of our bubbles, should we take the opportunity to be curious and open to the experience.

As I continue to explore the world as a nomad, I will make more time to slow travel, to go deep, to embed myself, to travel past the tourist boundaries, and where not everybody speaks English — and soon, I’ll be heading back to Mexico, the nomad life ongoing. I hope you’ll follow the journey on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and my personal blog juliedevire.com.
